Ok well i finally figured out what the problem is. Not getting enough voltage to the ignition coil. When I hit the start button it starts right up but as soon as I let off it dies, i checked the ballast resistor and it goes from 12 volts on one end to 1.5 volts on the other end (the end that goes to the coil positive terminal and is also spliced into the ignition switch start wire).

Engine lights off, than dies as soon as key returns to run is classic ballast resistor failure. This situation can be checked by unplugging wires at resistor, and checking each upper and lower resistor coils for continuity. If one of the coils is open, not passing electrons, the device is no good. Voltage at ignition coil when in run should be around 7 volts.

That 1.5 volts you got at + terminal of coil is something I suspect is somehow back feeding around burnt-out ballast resistor.

Ok but I've already replaced the ballast resistor and have already done a continuity test on the new resistor and its fine. I checked out your wiring diagrams already and that is how I have my car wired up. Which is why I'm at a bit of a loss. could it be the guy at the parts store gave me the wrong resistor? The resistor that came with the new coil burnt out, its no good so that's the one I had to replace.
