Depending on what size pulley's on the alternator (probably 2½"), that's roughly right.

Otherwise known as 2400 engine RPM, if your alternator pulley is 2½" and your crank pulley is 6¼" (which sounds small to me, think it's closer to 7", which would mean alternator 6krpm is about engine 2140 rpm).

The dash gauge won't read anything meaningful/reliable if you do the wire mod.

I was hoping the answer would be better like the dash amp would indicate whether the system was charging or whether a discharge is occurring.....call it a charge indicator light?

If the dash amp gauge is in the higher resistance circuit in parallel with the underhood amp gauge in a much lower resistance circuit then would there be a measureable lower current flow in the dash amp circuit when the alternator was successfully charging away?

If bad things were detected a look under the hood at the underhood amp gauge would be in order to see if a melt down was in progress somewhere?

Should I investigate the Megafuse thing in the article referenced?

Nope. You won't get a meaningful indication on the dash gauge. You can convert it to a voltmeter very cleanly without any hacks. How much it costs depends on whether you do the work yourself or have it done for you. Look at this-- stealth
conversion of stock ammeter to voltmeter for "it must've come that way from the factory!" appearance; that's the primo, higher-cost option. People have also successfully bought an inexpensive aftermarket voltmeter, torn it apart, and retrofitted it to a stock dash cluster with clean results. See here and here, for example.
