I have a 1988 dodge ram w100 4x4 with a slant 6 that quits at random. When it quits it will just crank with out starting. If I dump a little gas in the carb it will fire up and run just fine. I started checking the fuel first by unhooking the fuel line at filter and cranking the engine. I got a good shot of fuel in the air. I found later that the carb was loose. The problem with quiting and not starting has lessened but is still happening. Yesterday I notice the pcv valve on the valve pan making some terrible nosie. I cleaned it with starting fuild but the sound didn't change. The engine sounds to berunning a bit rough now. I check the plugs none of them are causing a miss.

Any ideas?

I thought 1987 was the last year of the slant six trucks.

That's correct, '87 was the last year for the Slant-6 in trucks in the US and Canada.

Welcome to the forum. Besides realizing that your truck is an 87, can you give more detail? Does it have the lean burn? It is original, or how hacked it is? Cat? Carb?. That might give us more ideas.

It has a holley 1945. The number on the side is 40159. It doesn't have the ignition box on the fire wall. Big black box under the drivers side fender. I guess that means lean burn. The emissions system is missing the belt. I can hear the exhaust going threw it. The truck isn't hacked up under the hood to much. I've seen far worse.

It's titled as an 88. I haven't checked the manufacturer's date on the door. I just checked the vin to the title. I noticed when I went to any parts store I had to say 87 or slant 6 would never come up. Thanks for your help. I'd like to get this old truck up and dependable. Once again thanks!

My slant was stopping at random times about 2 years ago, and in my case the magnet on the pick up in the distributor was loose, which allowed the gap to change at random times, or as the engine heated up. I changed the pick up and it has been fine since. It sounds as if there might be many more sources of problems in yours, but that was the case on mine.

I did not discover this until I pulled the distrubutor and tugged on the magnet and could see the movement. It was very small, but significant.

I had a similar problem and it was the ignition (orange) box. Swapped that out and its never happened since.

But, I suspect your issue is vacuum and/or fuel related based on what you described.

The experts here (that doesn't include me) need to hear more info on your setup, issue.

Well I was working on my \6 today. I replaced the pvc valve and grommet. This did not help it. I decided to adjust on the carburetor. I looked up where the adjustment screws where on a Holley 1945. Once i got up there with my leaning tower of power (plenty of room under the hood of a dodge truck). i found my idle mixture screw was broken off and the carburetor's body looks cracked.

I was wonder if you guys could tell me if my truck is a lean burn? Or has it been removed. Here is a few motor pics.

Hard to tell if that distributor is lean burn by looking at the picture on my phone, but a non lean burn dizzy has only 2 wires coming out and has a vacuum can.

Should read has no vacuum can therefor no provision for vacuum advance indicating timing is controlled by LeanBurn computer. I don't see a vacuum can.

It is possible that one or more of Leanburn sensors are not functioning correctly sending no or misinformation to computer which it processes resulting in poor runability or no run condition. The old adage applies: "garbage in, garbage out".

And, there is the elephant in the room I have skirted around: computer pooped the bed.

If you go back and read it again you'll see that's what I said.

About your idle screw, it can have an allen head, so it is not broken, is under there: see this thread:

http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php ... 945#423908

Where does the carb look cracked?

About the computer, yes 1980's electronics were as not reliable as todays, so something might have gone kaput. One way to check is replacing the lean burn system for a pre-lean burn, which I have not done. However, I think it would require an older distributor/carb combination...

Can you use a lean burn 1945 in a non lean burn application?

I did for several weeks. It didn't run all that well, but then again the throttle shaft was worn out so it had a huge vacuum leak that I'd improve by spraying grease around it. So if the carb is in good shape it'll probably run fine. They're not like GM's computer controlled carburetors of the same era.

The lean burn was a decent system when it ran, but few mechanics understood it back in the day so they bad mouthed it a lot. When the computers fail, it's usually either dried out capacitors or broken/cold solder joints.

The Crack is right at the bottom of the idle screw, looks more like it's split. I haven't had a chance to see if the idle screw is back in there. About 2 days ago it stopped idling. It will only cold idle. I have ordered a carb nos off ebay.

The distrubuter only has 2 wires. No vacuum hoses or anything. Thanks for your help guys!

You guys where right about the idle screw. It was back in there with an Allen head. I looked at alot of pictures of other carbs none of them had the split like mine. It was made into the carb. I went ahead with my new carb it runs much better. The only thing is now when I put the breather on it starts to have a miss. With the carb I bought I couldn't hook up 1 vacuum hose.
