I believe '66 was the first year for the blue paint scheme and also the first year of the updated valve cover (single chimney/grommet-style pcv), can someone confirm this? Did some slants come off-the-line with the old style paint and valve covers, and is there anyway to tell how my engine would have come?

I'm also interested on the full details of the paint colors of nearly everything under the hood.

1. What kind of finish (gloss, semigloss, satin, etc) was used on the air cleaner, breather, voltage regulator, etc?

2. What color and finish was used on the intake, accessory brackets, pulleys, and power steering box and pump?

3. Were any of the parts powder coated?

EDIT: My car is a California car with the close PCV system, if that makes any difference.

No, red. '70 was the first year for blue.

Yes, '66 was the first year for the grommet (rather than chimney/cup) PCV valve setup, but '66-'69 valve covers still have the ridge-top design with the front chimney for the oil/breather cap; the smooth-top cover with a cam-twist oil cap at the front, grommetted PCV valve in the middle, and grommetted breather at the back started in '70.

Usually gloss, sometimes satin -- determined both by what paint was in the house and how quickly and carelessly it was applied.

Same as engine assembly (red)

accessory brackets
Red or black depending on which bracket's in question

pulleys
Black

Black

No -- would have been WAY too costly for Chrysler to even joke about thinking about. Nothing stops you doing it, though. Have you seen Leanna's work? She makes powder coat walk and talk.

None to the paint scheme underhood.

Wow amazing info as usual Dan!

I don't you have a potential source for the '66-'69 style valve cover?

EDIT: Also, this is the correct '66-'69 valve cover, right?

That is indeed a '66-'69 valve cover, looks like it's painted the moderately green blue colour used in '69. Or it could be a greenish cast to a photo of an engine painted '70-'83 blue, though that colour is a great deal less green than the '69 colour.

If you want the paint job to be like my '62 as it came from the factory:

- On the intake, just use a paint brush and just slop it on the top and sides haphazardly, and let it run down all over the place; leave the bottom unpainted except for the drips.
- A similarly highly accurate treatment was made with the block which obviously had the bell housing attached when it was sprayed; there was plenty of overspray on the bell housing...!

Engine painting at the Chrysler factory was not a haven for artisans.....LOL

BTW the VHT Crysler Red (SP155) is an amazingly close match to the factory original.... see bottom of page 2.
