So I took the ol truck out for the first time today. I got about 2-3 miles down the road with the /6 running good, then it just shut off while I was driving in 4th gear at about 40mph. I pulled off the road, popped the hood, and it seemed as if everything was okay (maybe the fuel filter looked a little not full). After sitting for a few minutes, I turned the key and it started again. continued down the road another mile or two and the same thing. It continued to repeat this process 4 more times on the way to the tire shop.

The fuel pump, lines, and filters are new and the carb was just rebuilt. The ignition coil is also new.

After letting it sit for a few minutes with the hood up, it restarts right up and seems to run flawlessly for a mile or two until it cuts out again.

Whats the chances of this being related to an exhaust leak? I was thinking maybe as I drive a small exhaust leak takesover the clean air under the hood. When viewing a short video previously, Dan said he thinks I have an exhaust leak. If this is the case how do I locate where the leak is coming from?

Thanks,
-Scott

The fuel sock in the tank could be clogged

Ed,
There is no sock in the tank. I pulled the pickup tube out and it was good. Also wouldn't that make it not run smoothly the whole time? It runs great, with good fuel flow for a few minutes, and then cuts out.

My temp gauge isnt working either, but could heat have something to do with it? The radiator is getting warm and doesn't start steaming or anything. When I pulled the breather cap off the head, I did see it smoking a little. Should this concern me?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Check the condition of the electronic pickup in the distributor. Mine behaved just as yours is. I discovered the magnet loose, which allowed it to move. A new one fixed it. I think the gap closed up when it got hot.

I do not think an exhaust leak could cause this behavior. Do you get spark when it stops running? Pull the coil to cap lead from the cap and crank while holding it near the block. Do NOT hold it with your hands. If you get spark, then problem is likely fuel. If no spark, then problem is ignition.

If the sending unit pickup tube is clear (no rust build up) It might be a vacuum being drawn on the gas tank. If no air can get in, it can starve the fuel pump. This would happen faster with a full tank with less air to expand. Check tank vent tube or vented gas cap.

change the fuel filter my dart used to do the same thing. It had a lot of small crud and looked like dirty dark colored fuel when I took it off and drained it.

Cheap imported junk? Defective? You won't know until you try the spark test that Sam mentioned...

See if it starts up after a few minutes with the hood closed, instead. That will help figure out whether it's temp-related (more likely ignition) or time-related (more likely fuel vacuum).

Only a mile? That doesn't seem like a long enough time to be heat-related...

But try the spark test, otherwise we're shooting in the dark.

I would try the ballast resistor or, if your car has electronic ignition, try the ignition module (orange or blue blox). Mine was cutting out after a few miles, then would start up, same thing repeated. It was the orange box.

I'm not running a ballast resistor, I have a pertronix coil with a built in resistor.

One time my dart was running perfectly and then suddenly started to sputter and died. I waited a few minutes and then it started right up. It did this a couple times....I was pulling my hair out trying to figure what went wrong...it turns out one of the nuts on the coil post came loose and the wire was intermittently making contact. I snugged up the nut, problem solved.
