I've got a line on an Offenhauser dual carb manifold with a pair of new Weber 38DCNF carbs. It's a good price, but my last experience with dual carburetors was back in the 70s with a pair of 1V Solexes in a Volkswagen bug.

These Webers are synchronous two barrels - both barrels open at the same time. I'm not terribly concerned about the effect on gas mileage because I don't drive the truck much (it's a '61 D100, 225ci) and it's mostly a show truck.

I'm also more interested in low end performance rather than the top end. About the fastest the engine turns is 3000 rpm. It's stock and the most I intend to do is shave the head to increase the compression a bit and maybe put in a mild cam, later this winter when I rebuild it.

Transmission is a NP420 4 speed, rear end is an 8 3/4" with 3.91 gears, which I'll change out this winter to 3.23s (tires are 295R15/50, about 26.5" in diameter).

What I foresee as trouble is the throttle linkage and jetting. I recall spending a while on the VW getting the Solexes synchronized. The intake manifold has a heater box to match the exhaust manifold and, I suppose, at some point I'll get a set of Dutra duals, so cold starting shouldn't be a problem. Oh, the other things that I don't know are how the chokes are implemented (the current one barrel carb has a manual choke) and, well, those "unknown unkowns" - stuff that I don't know that I don't know.

So the long and the short of it is, will the carbs and intake work for me? I know that I can go with a 2 barrel or 4 barrel and have it easy, but I show the truck, so the visual impact counts for me.

If 3000 RPM is all you intend to use I would run a factory 2bbl manifold and a good Carter BBD or Holley 2280. If 3000 RPM is all you intend to use then don't bother changing the camshaft.

If you want something that looks cool, takes a Weber and doesn't need synchronizing I have one of these manifolds and a Weber DCOE I'll sell you. I think you'll even have room for an air cleaner!

I think maybe you'll need that shaved head and Dutra duals upgrade (with suitable exhaust) to let it breathe better, but I had mine on a stock build (with shaved head and DD's) and it ran pretty darn good.

My Webers have electric choke which is easy to wire (to a wire tripped by ignition switch). They were jetted from the factory for a 1.8-1.9L four cylinder (x2 = 3.6-3.8L), so they were spot on when I adjusted the AFR, I didn't need to change the jets, but that's not hard in Webers.

For the linkage, I think you'll need to fabricate something for your Webers, I did, and mine are likely oriented 90 degrees from what yours are (if I'm imagining the setup you have correctly).

pics? Double two's definitely have the eye candy aspect to them as well.

Hey you Weber running guys- what is your solution for ported vacuum for the distributor? Drill another hole in the carb body above the throttle plate?

Probably you could eventually make it run well. I think it would take a lot of tweaking and tuning and syncing, and I also think it wouldn't be a good match for the RPM range you plan on running the engine at. A 2bbl is well and truly plenty for torquey low-RPM truck duty; what you propose amounts to a non-progressive 4bbl (just with two barrels over here and two barrels over there).

Right-size carb + E-Z tune + no pesky syncing + visual impact: Buy my custom parallel-2bbl intake and matching new Motorcraft 2100 carb, polish the intake (it's aluminum), and put on whatever keen air cleaner/scoop strikes your fancy; the 2100 has a 4bbl-sized air cleaner neck.

My carbs have ports for vacuum advance, I just linked the hoses together with a T.
