I am looking at one of these engine overhaul kits from Kanters. Looks like complete rebuild, including new camshaft. Is it possible to do the rebuild without removing the engine from the car?

In a 66 Dart (a.k.a. "narrow" A-body)? Hell no. You have to pull the engine to replace the oil pump anyway. No way you will be able to do a rebuild with the engine in place.

I can have the engine out of that car in 4 hours without rushing. Buy a used engine stand, rent a hoist. There's no substitute for hot tank cleaning of the block and head.

after the time wasted fighting and struggling, the lack luster job you'll do, and the damages you will probably cause the car, just pull the motor. how are you gonna change main and rod bearings? piston rings? hone? clean the gunk out of the oil pan?

Just pull the engine, put it on an engine stand so you can actually see what you're doing.

I replaced/fabricated my exhaust system from the collector backward completely last week without lifting the car...but even that was crazy...rebuilding an engine requires pulling it out of the car.

This week I'll put it up on jack stands and fix all the bad welds I did last week...

If you want to rebuild without removing the motor, get a tractor that has removable sleeves. Even then you might want to remove the motor.

The only reason I can imagine for wanting to do it that way is if you don't have an engine hoist and don't want to shell out the money for one. Trust me, hoists are not expensive enough to put yourself through this. My friend bought a Big Red 2-ton hoist from Northern Tool years ago for around $250, and we've swapped more engines with that thing than I can count. If cost is a barrier, I'd recommend going to Harbor Freight and buying the cheapest Chinese POS they've got. If the seals in the jack fail, take it back and have them replace it until you get a Wednesday model. You can always sell it on Craigslist when you're done with it.

To me, it's not worth any effort unless you hot-tank the engine and heads. That's the one of the most important parts of the overhaul- to get the crud out of the cooling system. Otherwise, it's just a 1/2-Axx repair, and probably not worth the effort & dollars. My 2-cents.

hi sages- agree. take the engine out. did this twice first in 68 on a chevy 6 and in 93 on a sl6. only change would be to find one of those lifting angle irons designed for the sl6 which bolt right into holes in the head designed for this purpose . doctor dougmo used to have a few of these, maybe for sale. allows you to lift the engine out and stay level. reduces number of bad words too. cheap hoists are generally available used . have seen them for 50-75. dont go to the cleaners for these where youll be clipped for 189. regards bob f
