I had my kickdown cable adjusted so when I punched the gas, e.g. cruising along at 30-50 mph, it would go down into second gear reliably. Otherwise, I didn't notice shifting, down or up, too much, it was pretty benign.

But, last week, I took about 1/8" of slack out of the kickdown cable to see what a bit of adjustment would do. The results were stark. Now, my tranny stays in gear longer, e.g. when accelerating from a dead stop it shifts into second, pretty hard (chirps the tires occasionally) and then into third at like 50 mph or so - this is when I'm putting my foot to the floor, as if I'm racing someone. Also, when I let off the gas to slow down from a cruise, I notice it shifts into second noticeably when I slow to say 20 mph.

I don't believe anything is wrong, it is upshifting and downshifting at seemingly appropriate speeds, rpms, but it is much more noticeable, i.e. the shifts are "solid" where before they were "soft" and hardly noticeable. Is this normal, OK? I like how it shifts now, especially upshifting, it's like a new tranny with a shift kit or something. Did I have it misadjusted before? Is this variability in shift response supposed to be adjustable according to the driver's preferences?

My tranny was rebuilt about 20K miles ago, so I would expect it to act normally.

Thanks, I'm not a tranny person, just curious if this is normal.

Brian

Simple explanation is that by removing some slop from linkage to throttle pressure lever, internal hydraulic pressures have been increased. This change makes the transmission think or sense a larger throttle opening than what is occurring so transmission acts as if one were driving more aggressively requiring harder quicker shifts. This is sort of what a shift kit accomplishes.

Readjust linkage so the throttle lever, it being the little half moon slotted attachment point at top of throttle lever shaft, is relaxed enough to give acceptable shift action; this adjustment will be arrived at by trial & error.

FSM gives factory shift point ranges for stock engine & transmission.

That is very helpful feedback, I'll check the FSM.
