1965 225 slant six with cracked block. 1979 slant six in good shape. If bearing journals are the same size on all 225 cranks, exactly why can't I put the 65 crank in the 79 block (so I can use the 65 cable shift trans).
I can't use the 79 crank because the register for the torque converter is larger. Where are the problem areas when using the early crank in the late block?

79 engine is a cast crank engine, where the 65 is a forged crank engine. Bearings are the same diameter, but a different width. You can swap cranks between years 1960 to 1976 (early 76 might be forged). What you can do is use the complete 79 engine, and use an adapter ring in the end of the crank, and a 68 up flexplate. The flexplate is available from any parts store, if you don't have one. Then your Cable shift trans and converter will work.
I have those adapters available, as does Doc, and T-flyte Patty.

I knew one was forged and the other cast. I am not really bothered about that. The 79 engine ran just fine, I bent the frame on my Volare wagon (long story) so the car is going to scrap. I hated to let a perfectly good engine go but I didn't really have a use for it, until I found the block cracks on the 65. I knew the torque converter to crank end was going to be a problem but I didn't know where to get the 'adapter'.
Any help would be appreciated.

Just in case anyone was wondering why the cranks don't interchange. The cast crank has wider main bearings and the rod bearings are also wider. This physical difference makes the interchange not possible without machine work.

It's the other way around:

Cast crank engine has narrower bearings than the Forged crank engines.
