My car had a head rebuild, we used the original springs. It is a 62, the engine sat for 25 years. the valves seem to stick intermittently causing the pushrods to slip out from under the rocker. After I put them back and adjust it does it again. Only thing it could be is sticky valves as the push rods are NOT bending. Would putting a set stronger valve springs (new and high performance) be helpful.

I am at wit's end and would appreciate some feedback on this!

On a budget, "I can't afford new ones" rebuild, that might fly...my first rebuild was that way... but my machinist had a spring testing machine to work with...I pulled 3 heads worth of original used springs for him...and he picked the best 12 for the job....(we barely had that many that were in tolerance), the remainder were in the 10lb to 35 lb range and had long since given up being useful in it's life time....

On a daily driver they don't have to be hipo, a new set of single springs for a 225/318 are just fine....I would worry about the dual damper type springs if you had a very high lift or high duration cam in your mill....

I will buy new ones then, I wasn't asked if I wanted new springs so I will replace them and hope that is why the valves are doing what they are doing.

I'd be more concerned about the guides being too tight. Rarely will a valvespring be too weak to close a valve and not be physically broken.

so how does one cure the guide from being too tight? do i ream the guide and how much larger should the guide be than the valve, and is it the valve and guide expanding in the heat that makes it stick. I expected the machinist to have done this right. After all he is my drag racing friend's machinist. He put new guides in

Ok so I have done a little research, so if my valves are sticking a bit I should mic the difference between the guide and the stem. Then see if they are in tolerance. buy the proper reamer or reamers and use them. Then hone them.



I read that honing is important for the proper lubrication of the valves. Would honing the guides without reaming them help if they weren't honed properly the first time?

Sounds like a 9.5mm hone will do the trick
