I am not sure which transmission I have. I think it is a 904. I am looking to convert it to a floor shift or get new cables for the push button. What do I need to get for this?

Greetings,

I have been looking at the cables on my '64 Valiant with PB 904 transmission. Layson's in Seattle shows replacement cables for gear selection and Park.... For like $275 each... I mean OUCH !

The park cable has a twisted wire inner, and looks as though the cable inner could be easily re fabricated out of a motorcycle clutch cable. The shift cable might be more difficult.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced source for these cables?

Yeah, same ol' Layson's, full o' laughs. Think very carefully and do a good bit of research before you decide to spend money at Layson's. They have a long and ugly reputation for screwing people. See, for just a few examples, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. Much of what they sell (including these transmission cables) is not their own; a large proportion of their product line is bought elsewhere and marked up. They're almost never the only source for a part; see here for a listing of some more reliable vendors.

None of those places will likely have your trans cables, though. You can get new ones in very fine quality from Imperial Services, but the price there, while lower, isn't low. You can certainly find good used ones with a parts-wanted ad on this board. If yours just have some burnt-through areas on the outer jacket, that's fixable at low cost.

Also, you might check with these people.

A floor-shift conversion is possible, but it's not simple, easy, or inexpensive. Best keep the buttons, which are way cooler than a boring ol' lever anyhow.

I was on imperial last night but I couldn't find it. I am going to have to look again. I am going to the Mopar Junkyard in Starke Florida next week so maybe I can find something there.
