Bought the 990817V Top Catwhiskers set. The package says they are supposed to fit:
"1963-66 Valiant 2-door hardtop" (?)

None of them fit the outboard door positions.
I tried each of the four long ones.
The four long ones are about 5/16 inch too short and the clip placement is wrong.

Anyone have trouble or success finding correctly-cut catwhiskers for 63-65 2-door Valiant hardtop?

And are 63 and 66 catwhiskers the same?

I purchased a set from dantesparts.com for about $115.00. After a lot of cussing, skinned knuckles, etc., I came to the conclusion that all of the new whiskers just would not work. In particular, the sets for the rear quarter windows on my 63 2-dr Valiant. After one slipped out of my hand and fell down inside the door, I put the cover back on the car and haven't touched it in nearly 6 months. Maybe one day....

Greetings,
I have a '64 Valiant convertible, with the original whiskers (crumbling) still equipped.

I measured them for your information if that may help.

The inside rear measure 17 9/16", the outside rear at 15"

Both inside and out on the doors measure 25 3/4"

I hope that info might help in some way. Someday I'd like to replace mine, and if we post our discoveries here it will help many folks... maybe even the vendors.

Thanks. Neil

That's interesting, because the four longer ones in this kit measure 25 3/4 (should be 26.125 - and .125 as a fraction makes a emoticon) and the clips don't line up with the clip holes.
I wonder if three of these match the convertible.
The clips on the bottom two do not match or mirror any other.

But then the other two pairs measure roughly 22 and 19 inches, which roughly match the lengths of the old rear quarter cat whiskers on the 2-door HT.
The word "rough" keeps coming to mind whenever I look at them for some reason. Initially, I convinced myself I would like them better after they were installed.
Not sure whether the clip locations match because I don't want to pull the old ones until I get a correct replacement set.

I got these from Jegs, who handed me off to their supplier, PUI.

You guys are trying to install these with the glass in place? I've only done a few sets but it seems to me that it's tricky enough with the glass out since they need to tip their little tabs into place. I've also found that the old tabs almost all break off in the door and need to be pryed out with a screwdriver and needle nose pliers.

Well maybe they would be willing to pay the freight and accept a return. They seem like a reputable outfit. Handing off is not really in the customer service handbook that I read.

I would agree with Pat.

Here's how I was handed off.
I loved the part where it gave the ETA.
This may have been taken from a newer edition of the customer service handbook.

"Thank you for placing an order with JEGS.
So that we may better serve you, we have arranged to have your part# 233-990817V shipped directly to you from our vendor. The vendor has provided an estimated shipping date of NO ETA."

No idea who PUI is, other than being a farmout "service provider" for the likes of Jegs.

Also no idea why we are expecting anything but a giant hassle ordering things like cat whiskers from places like Jegs. Just because they have it on their site doesn't mean they're a smart place to buy from. They set up shop to sell hop-up parts, and they used to do an OK job on those—mostly because when someone called up and asked them a question about the Holley carburetor or Mallory distributor they'd bought or were thinking of buying, someone at Jegs could read the required info from the Holley or Mallory book. Maybe they still do OK with that kind of stuff; I don't know. I do know I'm not about to buy headlamps or cat whiskers or carpets from them, for similar reasons why I'm not about to buy a "Raybestos" wheel bearing. I also don't shop for ground beef at the hardware store, and I don't buy linoleum flooring at Safeway, and I don't buy brake fluid at the farmer's market.

Factory parts books show same window belt weatherstrips (the formal name for this what we're talking about) for '63 thru '66, body style by body style. Restoration Specialties shows nine different sets of Cat Whiskers for '63-'66 A-bodies. 990817V is indeed listed in their cattledog as fitting '63-'66 Valiant hardtops. Perhaps that's a cattledogging error, since we have multiple people in this thread saying those whiskers don't fit those cars. Maybe they've swapped the 2-door hardtop and 2-door sedan set numbers in their listings, or the 2-door hardtop and the 2-door convertible numbers. Or maybe they've swapped a Dart listing with a Valiant listing, or a Valiant listing with a Barracuda listing.

Maybe someone should get with Restoration Specialties and say "Look, we've got a situation on our hands here; the cattledog is clearly wrong—a bunch of us are having the same results where this one particular kit does not fit the car it's listed as fitting. If you'll send me the following nine sets and let me do some careful measurement and scrutiny, then let me send back all except the kit I actually need, for a refund, I will find exactly what the error is so you can fix it."

Or just skip all the monkey-motion and uncertainty altogether and order by length you need from Gary Goers (listed at the top of here). His part number W-6. "State length needed". Under six bucks per panel. His p/n 186 or 188 for the clips, times however many you need, which you install in the right locations.

But for god's sake, don't buy stuff like this from Jeg's or Summit or the lemonade stand the kids at the end of the block are running.

Parts Unlimited Inc or
PUI Interiors.

I was searching for beltline weatherstrips and this part number kept coming up on the Internets.
And the best price was Jegs. (but they all were getting them from PUI)

I read somewhere ones cut for your car with the clips already installed were better than the build-it-yourself ones.

Does Gary Goers include instructions for how to install the clips?
Because I don't see how without a specialized tool.
Youtube? Even if it's for a Cheby.

Thanks, Dan.
I think I will go with Gary because he has a trustworthy name.
I wish I had time to do the research on early A-body catwhiskers/beltline weatherstrips, but I better leave it to someone in a sunny state or with a garage. My car is one the street in Seattle.
And this was the second company I tried. It was sunny and dry in Seattle when I first ordered them.

No…it's pretty simple, they press into the spine of the catwhisker strip.

JEGS is sending a return label and says they will refund my purchase.

And they did sell me a nice 17662 Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler that sounds good.
