I didn't know this, but my alfa buddy shared this article with me. Their mechanical FI system is really intricate...it's like a little engine block, with crank and pistons, even has it's own tiny oil filter...

Mercedes-Benz used similar injection system at 1950's before first generation Bosch D-jetronic. Technically close to diesel pump of that era.

What I found interesting was that Alfa did all the US cars with FI, but in Europe they used carbs. how times have changed....

In the article was mentioned that carbs didnt pass emission tests of EPA. For many other countries there was no pollution limits at 60's. Some cars including Saab had 2-stroke engines with added oil for fuel. Fuel injection was used for exotic sports car only.

Many of the best carburetors were made in Italy. Weber, Solex, Dell'orto.

Yes, but now Europe has the most stringent emission standards...which leads us to the VW debacle...amazing they would pull such a scam on a global scale and incur the inevitable wrath, loss, embarrassment. Unfathomable greed leading to stupidity. To use such technical prowess in such a stupid way.

It makes me wonder if they foresaw getting busted one day but simply could not ignore the short term gains. They may have even taken the scandal into consideration, as in a few years or so, they may well be the global leader by getting this toehold in the US, despite the scandal.

And I thought what a marvelous way to handle bothersome regulations. I wonder if they actually broke any laws, or did the lawyers find a loop hole in the regulations.

I also wonder how many other manufactures have done the same thing and haven't got caught...
