I picked up a 63 Dart it was someone else's project and he just didn't have time for it anymore. A few things about it first.

It has a front and rear off a 1975 Dart, so it has the more common wheel pattern, 14inch tires, has a 1975 sl6 and the A904 in it, steering column and ignition from the 75 Dart. The engine was rebuilt, but sat in a barn for a while.

After I put some fresh tires on it and took it to a shop for exhaust. Decided to drive it to see the issues it had. It's biggest issue was that it would die in gear at a stop and it was a gigantic pain to get her started again.

I rebuilt the carb it's the 1bbl Holley 1945, at first I installed the accelerator cup upside down and it backfired, but I corrected that and it's no longer doing that. I checked the timing and it was 6BTDC so I set it to 0TDC. I replaced all the hoses because the old ones were brittle and hard. I've changed all the filters air/fuel/oil. I did an oil change and went with 20w50. Emptied the gas tank, put in fresh gas. I replaced the plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor.

So, here's my issue and I think it might be the accelerator pump delayer spring. I start it up, let her sit for a little bit, drive her, but anything over 30mph and she just dies.

My other thing is I think my hoses might be in the wrong places. It has a really weird setup and after looking at diagrams provided here, I'm still relatively unsure I have it correct. Also, why is there 2 fuel filters? I can take photos and if someone could mark them up and tell me where I'm wrong I'd appreciate it.

Also, I'm in AZ so I don't have to do emissions here, if I could eliminate that stuff I'd like to.

Two filters could mean that there is crud in the gas tank. I would change the filters and see how that affects things. Also, I would bump the timing back up. I would try about 10* BTC and work from there.

Both fuel filters have been replaced.

Any particular reason to start from 10* BTC ?

That's just where I have had my slant sixes set at. I think my Volare Super Six was around 14* but I can't remember for certain.

I'm having this same problem. Except my timing light is in the mail. I just got my truck and nothing else I own needs one. But I think it's my accelerator pump also. I'm really just replying so that I get notified about responses. I found a 2 bbl intake near by and I'm trying to buy it so maybe all this is for nothing if I upgrade to a 2bbl. That is if it's the carb.

Sounds to me like a fuel starvation.. the accelerator pump only works when the throttle is first opened, not as much a player at 30mph.... Check to eliminate:

Fuel pick up in the tank may be restricted limiting flow to fuel pump. blow out the fuel line with low pressure compressed air. 15-18 PSI max.

Fuel pump may have crud in it.. limiting volume and pressure to carb. A fuel pump volume test at cranking may eliminate both of these... but if you don't know that you are getting enough fuel to the carb...

If those two check out, then move to the float level. Too low a float level may cause starvation.. although someone else here on the forum would need to confirm that.

Report back with observations and progress..

I fixed mine yesterday. Floats were stuck. I banged on it with a rubber mallet. I didn't hit it hard but I hit it firmly half a dozen times. I'm going to order a kit and new floats and clean it up next week.
