Can someone tell me what is a safe operating temperature for our cars/ trucks. Is 200F safe? 205F ? I am talking about normal driving and cruising down the interstate.

I am trying to get my electric fan on my truck to work like I want and here is what I need to know. If I have an electric fan switch that does not switch on until 205F and then switches off at 190F will that be OK long term?

Thanks

Rick

That seems a little hot to me.

I was not able to find an electric fan temp switch I was happy with so I use a manual switch and keep my eye on the temp gauge.

The DeSoto got to 230F at one point in the off road portion of my Baja trip with no ill effects.

Mine runs 185 around town and 205 on the interstate. I would think turning on the fan at 205 would allow the temperature to creep up before it started to cool off.

200°F is no problem for the mechanicals. Fuel percolation after shutdown could be an issue, but everything else will be fine.

on the D150 I installed an adjustable Derale fan controller,

http://derale.com/products/electric-fan ... ontrollers

I went with the unit that reads temperature from a water jacket port in the head, I have automotive friends that say the right way to control a radiator fan is to read the temperature at the radiator or radiator exit hose...

I set the fan to turn on slightly above the thermo opening point.
I am currently running a 195 thermostat, so I set the fan to energize at about 205,, which is close to where your sensor is set.

FWIIW, I had also ran a 180 degree thermo as a trial, the engine ran cooler per the dash temp gauge, but the engine performance just felt crisper with the 195 so that is what I am running now.

Yes, that temperature range is safe. Try to get hold of a fan controller that will allow the fan to run after you switch off the ignition to cool down the carburetor, otherwise you'll have unpleasant problems with driveability and hot starting/idling. Read this.

With today's oils, you should have no problems at all, unless you are on
the edge of detonation w/your running comp. octane combo. For reference,
genital motors ran the FWD line of cars in the '80's & '90's well past that B4
kicking the fans on, some to 223F, with aluminimum heads of course.
Heat soak/radiation from the exhaust is already a high ambient temp. bug,
and as Dan stated is something to take steps to avoid, anything you can do
to minimize it is a plus.

I typically am comfortable running my Slants around 200-215 F. With a 195 F thermostat's I have used (5 or 10?), the engine will run somewhere around 200-210 anyway.
