Been awhile since I last posted. Aluminum slant six, were all the heads stamped "SPECIAL"? Local guy has an aluminum motor however the head is not stamped "SPECIAL". The head as a riveted plate with no other markings

No, only the first batch of heads for the aluminum engine were marked "SPECIAL". The next batches had plain plates or 5-pointed stars, and the last batch had the 2206035 casting number and was used on both iron and aluminum engines.

What was special? Is it just more accurate location of the combustion chambers and other features? Or are there other significant differences?

I believe chamber/casting dimensions and registration were the only improvements.

Slightly smaller combustion chamber with more accurate placement consistency, notched pushrod cavities to provide the necessary extra clearance for the angle the pushrods sit at in the aluminum engine. These changes were incorporated on all \6 heads officially for the 1963 model year, but actually during mid-late '62 production.
