Patrick and I bought some tooling for sinking inserts into small block decks that repair cracked decks on late model blocks. Looking at what they do, it could be a solution for getting 1/2" studs into a Slant block.

I looked at one of my blocks today and depending on how big the diameter of the inserts are I just may be able to sink them in a Slant deck. These are blind inserts so there would be no issues with water coming up the stud holes.

IF there is room for them I am going to try to build a jig to mount a Slant block to Patrick's Bridgeport and start making holes.

This is in no way a cheap solution IF it can be done. Inserts are $10 each and the block really needs to be given a clean-up cut when done.

Anywho, I have a couple guinea pig blocks laying around to drill on. Will report back later on feasibility.

What am I missing........

Wouldn't you just drill and tap the existing hole bigger?

Why would you need an insert? (which would need a bigger hole)

Drilling to size for 1/2" does not take out all the existing threads. It makes it a huge PITA to tap the holes out.

It has been done, but it is not fun.

Is there enough metal for an insert?

The smallest insert for a 1/2" I can find is a 5/8"

I have already stated IF there is enough room. I have not seen these particular inserts yet. :D

You would use a roll form tap for tapping a blind hole, they use a larger drill bit because of the way they cut the threads in the metal, so you end up drilling the hole larger than with a traditional tap and remove all the pre-existing threads and still stay at 1/2" threads and keep a high % of thread engagement that is required. We did hundreds of the Chevy 6 cylinder blocks this way because they also had 7/16" bolts from the factory. No need to drill that much larger for an insert and adding more cost to the swap unnecessarily and possibly compromising the block either. Don't forget to also drill out the head bolt holes in the head also to have clearance for the larger head bolts.

Normally a 1/2 13 uses a 27/64 drill, that almost removes all the threads.
(.4219 hole)

A 1/2 20 uses a 29/64 drill, that does remove all the threads.
(.4531)

7/16 = .4375

I'll admit, I am new to the slant six (not Mopars) and I'm wondering about the need for this. Is it mostly for turbo/supercharged engines?

Really high compression, nitrous, or turbo/blower.

Might have some inserts in my hands by the weekend. I'll be able to kinda figure out then if this is even possible or not.

I have thought about upgrading to .5 inch. We will see the results.
Any ideas are always appreciated. To achieve this kind of performance out of these motors takes a team. our team is the best!!!!

Just heard from Patrick that the inserts and tooling are herr. Will get my hands on them Sunday when I am down there.

Saw the insert kit today. This is what one looks like. You put them in, stake them, then have the deck skim cut to even them all out. The insert is 1-1/2" long and blind. They make them in shorter lengths and with open holes if needed.
