Need to order dizzy and carb for my HEI swap. Which ones should I pull the trigger on from rock auto? I was reading about the Autoline D619 posted here. And I need to get a carb that has ported vacuum as my lean burn does not. So should I try to order a 1920 Holley for like a 1973 truck with a manual trans (my truck is manual)? I've got the junk yard GM coil and bracket, and the GM HEI module that was recommended on the HEI swap thread. Thanks again

I used a factory Mopar distributor from a slant six with electronic ignition, around '74 and up. Triggers the HEI module flawlessly. I also recommend using a relay to power the system.

Yes, I recently posted that I had ordered a D-619 and it had the Super Six governer in it and rebuilt (11.OR) vacuum can. There was speculation on the board that this might be a one-off, so I ordered another to confirm. I will report back when it arrives. If the D-619 is the same, has all the super six dizzy guts, all you need to do is replace the heavy spring with a lighter spring to get all your advance in earlier (if you want that extra tweak).

bigslantsixfan sells spring kits and the kit includes rpm vs advance curves for various spring combinations.

Brian,

Let us know.....I wouldn't mind getting one also....what was the price? I like to have spares since it is all plug and play.

Thanks!

I will let you guys know when mine arrives, it's been a week, so I assume they're actually rebuilding it.

The price was $50, and the cap and rotor that come with it are junky. As soon as it arrives I'll let you know; but the first one did indeed have the 9R governer and the 11.OR vacuum can (rebuilt)..

Does anyone have the later model hold down for the distributor? I was going to make one from a big block unit, but if anybody has one lying around I'd love to have one. I'll cover your shipping and a reasonable price.

OK, so I actually ordered two more of the D-619's so we'd have a couple more data points.

The first one, as you know, had the 9R governer and 11.OR vacuum can - a super six setup, minus the aluminum body.

The next two came in today. One had the 9R governer and an 8.5 can, the third one had the "regular" governer and an 8.5 can....ugh.

Reed gets extra super six bonus points for calling this one right!

It appears that it is indeed hit or miss, like a lottery ticket only (apparently) way better odds, that you'll get one or both of a 9R governer and an 11.OR rebuilt can. Out of three orders, I got two super six governers and one 11.OR vacuum can. If you're a baseball fan, that's batting .667 for governers and .333 for vacuum cans. I suppose they are just pulling old dizzy's from a scrap pile or random parts from a used parts bin and rebuilding these D-619's....somebody with the time should call Autoline or RockAuto and see if they can get them to pick and choose for customers....very unlikely.

I can only hope that my $100 experiment saved someone some pain.

Question is, if I may quote Dirty Harry..."do you feel lucky?"

BTW, I now have a couple extra 9R governers and a "homemade" 9R that is exactly to specs if anyone is interested, PM me.

I'd gladly trade a 9R governer for a later model dizzy hold down clamp...any takers?

I suppose I can make one from a big block hold down clamp, but does anyone have a distributor hold down clamp for the later type slant six bracket? Like the one is this thread?:

http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... 9618ccc596

PM me please,

Brian

I just got done plotting the mechanical curves on 3 of these D-619 Autoline distributors.... tomorrow I will plot the vacuum can curves to see which Wells knockoff can they are using...

There is no conformity between the guts in them like the Cardones... if you get a super six configuration you will just need to get a lottery ticket or run out and play the tables...

These are running at RockAuto at about $75+ and a $15 core charge, which isn't bad (Cardones are about $88 + $25 core, and WPS units are about the same but no core charge...but quality not as good there...) they have the same cast body like the Cardone and WPS units, but come with the Autoline tag screwed into the body, and the vacuum advance pods are cadmium plated.... over all they are a few bucks cheaper than the other brands, and seem to be a little bit nicer (although you will still need to file the edges of the top mating surface to a camfer so the cap will go on easier like the stock units have... I will also note these come with a rotor and a made in USA black cap with silver posts in the package as well....

The first one I got has a 9R governor and an 11R vacuum pods... curve shows that the stock spring configuration was intact and typical of the OEM distributor curve....

Volunteer #2 looks to have an 11R governor and an 11R vacuum pod... curve showed that the springs in it were stiff... and after cranking the unit to the top of the tach range (about 7000 crank rpms...), I could not get it to advance past 10 degrees at that high rpm (need a distributor for a boosted application? LOL)

Victim #3 had a 15L governor and an 8.5R vacuum pod... which would be typical for the most common OEM 1973-1975 distributors). During gradual spool the advance was kind of lazy than after 4000 crank RPM, the advance came on but was 'boucing' back and forth by 4 degrees... it became rock solid after 5500 rpm and advanced from 20 to 26 degrees when I topped it out at 7000 rpm...

After I map the vacuum advances I am going to autopsy these guys and see what's in them... I am most curious to see what the spring combination is in #2 to make it so stiff.... and why the advance in #3 bounces at mid-range rpm so badly, then doesn't pickup until it's high on the clock....

I'll post more data tomorrow... but already the data bears out that if you are getting one of these for a EI/HEI conversion that there is no rhyme or reason on the guts, so you will have to put the timing light on it and map the curve to see where to set your initial and how much advance it has to set your total....

FYI.

You shouldn't. Get a new distributor from Old Car Parts Northwest.

Get a Carter BBS for a '74 Dodge D-100.

Well randomness and some interesting items with regard to the guts...

First I will say that Autoline uses a weird slotted screw with an allen hex middle... they are not as easy to undo without destroying a couple to get them to loosen on the initial torque... those all went into the 'return with core distributor pile'... none of these have any lube in the mechanism...so that's not good either...

Dizzy #1... pegs were set correctly and the guts were all correct for a super six 3874876 dizzy... and in an odd surprise... the mystery 11R can actually seems to be what the original VC-239's used to be before SMP's manufacturing entity cheaped out and made them with a 8.5R arms... it had the full range of advance to 22 crank degrees, and the advance occurred over the range from about 8" vacc to max at about 16" vacc... it was an interesting discovery as I half expected the can to really be a VC-208 feather duster can.... the can is adjustable with an allen wrench...

So this one I will put back together and leave it alone as it's a good reman,,,

#2 actually had a 9R governor and the reason it max'd out at only half it's advance... the factory assembly left the spring post on the mainshaft at it's max outboard position so it was already at the end of the loop on the heavy spring with all the heavy tension for the rest of the advance....

Also had same Vacc pod as #1, so as soon as I move that post back into it's correct place, this one should be good to go like #1 as a super six distributor.

#3.... Vacuum pod was an 8.5R and seemed to fit the characteristics of a VC-184 or 185 typical of 1973-1974 distributor cans (a little different than the new VC-239 cans)...

I kind of had to laugh a little then roll my eyes... this one also had a 9R governor... but the peg weights look like they had been dremeled a bit and this allowed the advance to go a bit further as the pegs no longer fit the slot correctly... the pegs weren't clocked right so as it spooled up on rpms the weight bounced as they tried to advance then the one side got caught at the end of the heavy spring loop and bounced back... part of this also was a lack of lube on the moving parts so moving the weights with my fingers you could tell there were some stiff spots...

So I'll have to pull it apart... most likely I will replace the weights and put a medium set of springs in it and set it up as a faster advance high performance distributor for a stick shift car, and the vacc pod is fine for something running 10:1 on the street to keep from pinging on the highway but still get some economy.

Once I get some of these off my bench I may get a few more just to see what else I get.

Cheers....

Where do I find this slantsixfan as I need the springs on centrifical advance in the distributor?
