I replaced my fuel filter on my 1963 Dodge Dart 270 because it has been running a little rough. I decided I am going to start logging all the stuff I am doing to it. Next I am going to replace the carb gasket, and remove aftermarket AC that the previous owner put in. I want to keep it totally original.

Hello and welcome! A new fuel filter may not cure the rough running, but it is a good place to start.

If the aftermarket AC is vintage 1960s, then I say keep it, or at least remove it carefully so someone else cna enjoy it. When you are working on your car don't forget the basics like a valve adjustment, point gap and dwell, checking for vacum leaks, and vibration dmaper slippage leading to an incorrect timing mark.

Thanks, yeah I don't know how old the previous filter was so it is a mere process of elimination. I appreciate your other tips, I will be sure to keep up on those things. a vacuum leak wouldn't suprise me.
I have paperwork on this car dating all the way back to '63. The AC is a modern AC unit that was installed in 1999. If it was a 60's unit i'd agree with you in keeping it there. I will keep it incase I decide to put it back in someday though.

Welcome here. Your video is nice and clear. Three things:

1. You've got an exhaust leak under the hood, loud enough to be clearly audible in the video despite the camera's distance -- this is a likely cause of your rough running (exhaust gets sucked into the air cleaner, screwing up the mixture). It is also a likely cause of death to vehicle occupants (these cars have firewalls full of holes and leaks), so fix this promptly. It's probably at the intake-to-exhaust manifold junction, the exhaust manifold-to-headpipe junction, and/or a crack in the exhaust manifold.

2. Plastic fuel filter near hot exhaust manifold. You may want to have a do-over with a metal filter, and consider doing the Fuel line mod to reduce heat-up of the fuel.

3. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Pay careful attention to the details—use the good parts and remove the metal ring washers from the spark plugs, etc.

Hmm never smelled any exhaust, I'll be sure to look at that to see if there is a leak somewhere. I'll check these threads out and see if I can improve things.

If you are worried about what kinda crap is in the (fuel) tank, you might want to place a fuel filter before the fuel pump also. Not sure what your budget is, but New fuel tanks for these cars are very reasonable.

Fuel filter before fuel pump = good recipe for vapor lock. If you suspect crapola in the fuel tank, pull/drain/clean/seal.

I didn't "suspect" anything in the fuel tank, I just replaced the filter as normal maintenance, and if there happened to be stuff in the tank, then i'd know by seeing junk in the filter. I bought the car in July so I don't know when things were replaced. The car idles a little rough sometimes is all. It isn't a constant thing. The fuel has been running clean through the filter, the old one was just due to be replaced.
