Been hearing a weird noise last couple of days under the hood. It was my PCV valve!

I pulled it while it was running. It was really hot and I stuck my finger over it. The engine died! (I think!) I had to release it as it was 105* in the shade and I was on a hot parking lot.

I am thinking this is why my engine is running so lean, and why it blows blue smoke on the highway when I lift!

I bought the PCV valve that would fit the grommit, that fit my elcheapo Chinese chrome valve cover

Think I am right?

Blue smoke could easily be due to that POS Chinese chrome valve cover.
Those Chinese chrome valve covers have no baffles, so just plopping in the PCV valve will cause your engine to suck oil into the intake tract, fouling the spark plugs and causing exhaust smoke. If you gotta-just-gotta keep using that valve cover (the stock ones are much better quality), obtain a Stant 10078, Wix 42993, NAPA 2993, or AC-Delco 12C26 breather cap:

Image

You'll also need the correct grommet for this breather cap, which is a Dorman 42067, NAPA Balkamp 630-1052 or 630-1074.

These are the crankcase breather cap and grommet for an '84 Buick Electra Estate Wagon with 5.0 litre/307 CID V8. Put the grommet in the cover, and push the breather into the grommet. This breather has an internal filter and a 1" top hole, so just snap a standard Chrysler PCV valve grommet into the top hole and a standard Chrysler PCV valve into the grommet, and you're good to go.

PCV valve selection is much more than just "what'll fit the hole in the grommet?". They are calibrated devices. The one you installed is obviously not a close enough match for the requirements of this engine...your lean-running issue will likely clear up when you install the correct valve.

Well if another company would step up and build a nice slant cover I would buy it.

I hear the valve clicking with the hood closed.

Dan, that must be what you were talking about when you were looking at my Aluminum valve cover. Thanks for the more complete explanation and the photo. I will get that going on my car as well. Will the same gromet fit the aluminum cover?

Sam

Well she would die if I plugged the old pcv :( Same one on there since I dropped on this head. I painted the Buick breather matte black. painted it in the 100* sun.

It takes the same grommet for my Chinese or Taiwan made MP M or pentastar chromey breather. BTW I just pop out the breather and pour in the oil. (Hopefully less now.) I use a funnel at home. On the road just pour carefully. If you spill it doesn't hurt the MP sticker and it helps prevent rust. Just wipe it up.

Mopar style grommit and 72 slant PCV valve and it idle fairly smooth at 400 rpm! I looked and saw no idle screw! I robbed one off another BBD and turned it up to 625. set it pulling 19 inches of vacuum.

I'll turn a trip to Nashville for work tomorrow. Over 100 miles. We'll see if it pings etc.

With Dan's mod I have run as large as a 454 PCV for max flow, no blue smoke or any oil usage using the chrome valve cover. I purchased the Stant version for $9.00. Since then I have found black plastic ones as well.

H'mmm. Not sure one follows from the other (after all, Mopar 440 engines used the same PCV valve as 225s!) but keep an eye on your spark plugs to watch for lean running.

Not even close. For that you gotta go watch Doctor Dodge in action!

Will do, and thanks for the tip!
So far they are running a tan cinnamon color.
I will keep a new stock MOPAR PCV handy.

I've been trying to talk Spectre into putting baffles into their valve covers, or adding a slant six model to their new line of laser-cut aluminum valve covers. You guys might want to drop them a line if you like, let them know by posting in this thread on their message board if you're interested in such a thing.

Why Spectre? Well, I've got a few contacts there, and they're looking to develop a few more serious products than the dress-up items they've traditionally been known for.

Just got 3 of the grommets and it does not fit the chrome valve cover. They are not round. They are flat on the one side. Does anyone know the correct number or if they changed the number?

Rick

Give up on the valve cover-shaped trinket and put on a real cover, with real baffles. Then the real grommet and the real PCV valve will fit and work correctly

Someday, when I get the time, I am going to take a stock stamped steel valve cover, polish it, and powder coat it with clear. Shiny enough, doesn't leak, technologically superior to the cheap chrome ones.
