I cracked open my distributor today to replace the pickup coil and discovered one of the advance springs was missing. There's a red one in place, but I'm not sure if that's the light or heavy one.

Also, how about recommendations on spring usage - I've got a stock '68 Barracuda auto with highway gears. Not a racer, but I'm looking to maximize backroad driving and low-mid speed torque.

You are missing the long looped heavy spring to make it stock again...

What is the governor stamped? Did the distributor have a metal tag with a part number on it?

Depending on the governor stamp, I may have the spring you need... but there is more to it than just installing a spring (on EI distributors there is peg clocking), and what vacuum advance was installed? (does it have an ink stamp on the body, what is the stamp on the arm?)

What do you consider highway gears (2.76, 2.94, or???)

Vac advance doesn't have an ink stamp, but the arm has 7R on the upper side 0 on the reverse and the mounting plate has a partial number of ...753073 (or so it seems, it's difficult to read.)

Gears are 2:97

You might clean that up I would bet that's L11 or R11.
Something isn't correct, part generation 369... is too early for EI distributors, and your body and governor are not for points.
That's a bit odd... normally you'd see an 8.5R, 11.0R or X... I've seen only 6.5 and 7's on points distributors, maybe a bit of polish might show more....
They should be 2.93 or 2.94 depending on 7 1/4" or 8 3/4" rearend type, but that's a really good highway ratio for mileage and better takeoffs.


My recommendation would be to order a SMP VC-239 from RockAuto for your vacuum advance. Send me a PM with your address and I can send you an "11" long loop spring to restore the distributor back to it's normal function...

Thanks to @dusteridiot's advice and patience - the car runs again. Starts quicker, runs smoother, and feels stronger too (anecdotaly).

Timing set at 8' BTDC & all-in at 30' (was asked a few times, thought I'd throw that out there) Took great care in setting the reluctor/pick-up air gap and making sure the alignment is parallel.

While the car was down, I decided to replace my fuel pump and fuel line to the carb. I discovered some of fuel hoses were smaller than 5/16 which must have been restricting the system forward, So I took the chance to do a modified version of the fuel line mod often discussed here.

But wait, there's more - Changed the coil as well to one from Pertronics as this has (so I've been told) better characteristics for increasing low-speed drivability (torque) than most others which are either a direct replacement or perform better at higher RPM/HP ranges.
