Took me awhile, but I finally dug up this article (PDF download). Interesting detail, eh!

Shoot, lay it down like that and It would fit under the hood of a GEO Metro!

Ceej? Oh Ceej where are you?!?!?!?!

Or you could tell people you have 1/2 of a pancake 12 cylinder engine!

Silliness aside, that was an interesting article to read.

It has been too long from this thread, and the links no longer work. I found a Chrysler Marine ad from 1965 showing a side view of the "lay down Slant Six" with the 17 inch ruler.

Also found a top view in another ad, and it looks like the engine was turned 120 degrees to lay down on the left side. Which brought up this question:

How does the top oil return to the crankcase?

I didn't think the /6 had oil return passages on both sides of the head, just on the right side, past the spark plug tubes. If this is true, did the marine Space Saver have to fill up the valve cover with oil until that level reached the way down to the crankcase?

The concept of a flat package is quite interesting, good thinking by the engineers at Chrysler at that time. They likely picked the left side down to make maintenance access easier.

It has been too long since I had a /6, so how does the oil return to the crankcase from under the valve cover?

Jack

The first three pages are quite good, but I am not an SAE member. Does anyone have this article, or must it be purchased?

And thanks for the additional pictures, I had not seen those before.

This engine did not have a long run, although the /6 itself was available right up to the end of Chrysler Marine. Do you know why?

Thanks again,

Jack

You don't have to be a member; anyone can buy the paper.
