Yea, I have been thinking it was electrical since the wash too.

I worked at a truck wash on and off for 4 years part time so am aware of the electrical problems it creates.

As a matter of fact, when I got into the van after washing it, I was ready to pop the top and dry the distributor in case it didn't start. Well, it started instantly and I moseyed on out of the wash and on down the road about 3 or 4 miles until I found a place to cut my hair.
When I came out it started running like crap.
I figured it was something to do with the water, but after trying all of it, nothing seems to be working yet...

I have new plug wires waiting, I am going to pick up gas dryer, a new air cleaner, another accelerator pump if they have one, carb cleaner, another oil filter, (I am already screwing around under the thing, I may as well), a new fuel filter, and if it's cheap enough and they have it, some fuel line to replace the one I have there now... Once I change all of that, if it refuses to do what it's supposed to be doing... I will move onto a compression check and then try and re-set the distributor by finding TDC and setting the timing from there...

At this point, I am only minutes away from a frickin rebuild!!!

When did you buy gas?

Just before you washed it?

Actually no...
I bought the gas the day before, and I went all the way to San Diego and back on the same tank - and had over a 1/4 of a tank left when the $#!+ hit the fan...

Add Gas


There may be a small hole in the gas line inside the tank, and you're sucking a small amount air.

You're just getting enough gas for idle, but not to run correctly.....

Okay, finally able to fire it up this morning and it is still doing the same thing.

I grabbed my compression gauge and hooked it into #6 - nothing - maybe a few pounds.

Stuck it in #5 - nothing...

WTF???

Is my gauge screwed up or is the internals in the motor toast?
Going to try other holes now...

#4 just showed 110 pounds...

Well, #5 and #6 are showing 20 pounds and the 4-3-2 are showing 100 and #1 is showing 115 pounds...

Blown head gasket, perhaps # 5 and #6 are "talking" to each other, i.e. the rings and valves are fine, but the leak is between those two cylinders?

It turns out the timing of this happening directly after the car wash - was a total coincidence - done to throw me off track and have me throw a bunch of new stuff at the old sled! It is pissed at me for taking it so far away from home and on such a long trip!!!

Already located a shop that only works on classic vehicles - my sisters mechanic she has known for years. He said bring it over and he would do a leak down test to start - but he also said it sounds like a head gasket.

Already told him I am going to start a go fund me page to afford this now!

Towing bids so far! From $150 to $65 - it's only about 6 miles in the same town too!

Well this is going to suck no matter how I go.
He charges $110 an hour and says that I need to bring it over and drop it off and he may be able to look at it sometime today and then give me an estimate.
He wants me to leave my home away from home over there!
He says his placed is fenced and alarmed and there is nothing to worry about though...
It's just that the cost is going to be almost impossible for me right now.

It looks like I will have to figure out how to get it done by myself in her garage or a friends place if they have more room for me to park and work on it.

Gonna need a bunch of new gaskets before this is over too.

Anybody have a short list of what I am gonna need to order from the local parts store?

Looks like I might be spending Thanksgiving here now...

If you remove the Dog box the head should be staring you right in the face! If you have a strong helper you may be able to leave the intake and exhaust on the head and remove as one piece. But why did the head gasket blow? Might be that the head is warped and you have to disassemble the whole thing anyway to get the head planed.
