Ok here we go. 1983 D150 85K Slantsix. I recently changed the upper/lower and heater hoses. Also the radiator and thermostat. For my trouble I was rewarded with no heat. When I felt the lower hose when up to temperature it was cold. Thinking maybe a bad thermostat I installed a new one. Now I have heat but still no circulation. What's your thoughts?

Thanks in advanced.

PS: Don't understand why under my screen name it states 2 barrel super six.

If you have heat you have coolant circulation. The lower hose being cold means the radiator is working.

This is just a board item, it ranks you based on posts made/how active you are on the board.

No heat could be:

(1) clogged heater core
(2) faulty/disconnected coolant shutoff valve in heater core supply line
(3) disconnected/bypassed heater core (people do weird things)
(4) failed heater control head (if you have AC the HVAC system has vacuum operated doors and valves and the head unit as well as the individual actuators can fail)
(5) broken vacuum line feeding the coolant shutoff valve
(6) damaged/misadjusted heater control cable to the HVAC blend air door
(7) debris buidup in the vent system preventing airflow

Or some other odd situation. Does your truck have AC? Have you looked at the routing of the hoses in the engine bay? Are there any other problems with the HVAC system (no defrost, air won't blow etc...)

When the thermostat opens, at temperature, there should be circulation through the radiator. The upper hose should not be hot and the lower hose cold. LOL

Here's a question, how do you delete your profile. There's no point in asking questions.

I'll assume You meant You changed the upper & lower RADIATOR hoses,
then rad & 'stat. You said when it was "up to temperature", that indicates
the 'stat was working, you also haven't indicated any overheating.

To kind of back up Reed's post;
1)coolant always circulates from the head thru' the heater core & to the pump
2)Back flush the core from the pump end, put the head hose in a bucket.
3)The coolant heater control valve is almost always OPEN w/o vacuum, this
assures You won't be left w/o heat to defrost if the hose/line/controls fail.
It's job is to improve warm weather cabin comfort blocking the coolant.
4)If the upper hose is getting hot & the 'stat is opening, the lower hose may
be cool in winter temps idling for sure, but not ice cold!
5)You state no flow, does this mean visually w/the cap off? Or.......
6)what condition was the coolant in when You 1st cracked open the system?
Unless it was acidic smelling or rusty/orange, there's a small chance the
impeller is rusted away,....how long have You owned the tk.?

Oh,..and if the lower hose didn't have a long wound spring in it, & the old one
did, put the spring in the new one or get a spring if not.

What question have you asked that has not been answered?

In cold weather there is very little flow through the radiator and a very large temperature drop across the radiator. You have cabin heat and no engine overheating. What's the problem?

Killer6, thank you for redeeming the modicum of value for this thread. Prior to asking my question about the water pump I had already ordered the new pump. The brown tint in the antifreeze would present itself as the culprit being a rusted impeller.

Maybe I was looking for some validation in my diagnosis. Some of the responses were just, well, not to offend, moronic.

In conclusion how do you remove your profile?

Most people just disappear. Chuck, the administrator, could probably remove you if you really feel the need.

Honestly, your questions were open to multiple interpretations and so you received varying responses. If you're not open to that possibility and aren't willing to concede your part in the miscommunication it's your loss.

Did you mean no heat in the cabin (which is what I interpreted your question to be) or did you mean your engine is not getting up to operating temperature or did you mean that you just expect the lower radiator hose to get hot and it isn't?

I believe people were just not sure what you were asking.

Read your first post again and you can see it may have been a little hard for us to understand.

Step back and take a breath and continue to ask questions. There is lots to learn from this site

I doubt that your impeller is gone by the way.

Rick

The nature of the answers you get will tend to reflect the nature of the question you ask.
