The alternator on my '63 dart has been rebuilt but still seems pretty marginal in stop and go driving. I have a good alternator from a '71 Valiant. The '71 has two small wires terminals where there is only one on the '63. Is it practical to wire up the later alternator and if so, how?

Yes, you've got what is known as a dual field alternator. To use one of these with your existing wiring, simply connect one of the field terminals to ground and the other to your voltage regulator.

Wow. I did not expect it to be that simple. Thanks Matt!

Or take full advantage of the dual field alternator and upgrade to that system. Chrysler switched to dual field alternators for a reason.

Because it reacted faster, and wasn't sloppy like the buzz box (and won't get stuck and overcharge your battery...unless it malfunctions or is made from cheap parts...)...

It also is needed to keep your EI rock solid....(and probably a bit kinder to an EFI PROM).

One thing to note... any pre-1976 mopar had the alternator gauge directly wired into the circuit... in the 70's mopar's main wire out of the alternator was typically 12 or 10 gauge for the low amp alts and 8 ga for the larger amp alternator... (typically the amm gauge in the late cars is universal so going from the 45-46 amp alternator to a 65 isn't so bad... in a 1976 car, it only matters on how large the charging wire is since it's a shunt setup already...that being said putting one of the monster 100-120 amp version in... may not work too well...)

The earlier 60's cars wiring don't look to be that beefy when equipped with the 34-36 amp alternator... and typically the gauge was matched to the alt....so if you have something larger, you may want to think about a shunt ammeter, and/or upgrading the gauge and wiring... (especially if the wiring harness is original...)
