I'm separating this from another thread since this will be a fairly large post....and making the pics linkable since they were a bit sizeable.

Today we had nice weather so I opened up the shop and pulled a smattering of late model core manifolds and stacks to look at the 1973-81 choke stat pockets...


Here's a jumbled mess of candidates:

Let's look at a 1978 Super Six Setup. Here is the one under the hood of the Aspen I just bought.

Pull the pietin back and look at the stat and the linkage sits a bit to the valve cover side of the manifold stack central mating bolt... it also looks like someone altered the BBD lever so when I swap the engine
I will see if it's a modified 318 BBD.

Here is a close up the choke stat pocket on a married super six stack I pulled out of a 1978 Volare Wagon
back when you could walk out of a junkyard with the whole smash for $50.... It currently is on the pusher motor in the FDX hull and sports a 350 cfm Holley 2300 with electric choke so the pocket is empty.

Here are some choke stats I had laying around, the rusty and blue painted ones are Holley 1945 stats in not the best shape but good enough for a fitment comparison, the cadium plated one is my last Standard Motor Products Super Six stat in slightly used condition.

Stats

Let's look at the line up:

From Left to Right (Part Number, Casting Date):
3671862-2 8-14-73
3671862-2 3-16-73
3671862-2 4-25-74
3671862-6 1-8-76 Original Feather Duster Stack from my Hpak Duster- outlet is the same as the other exhaust manifolds
4027567-3 5-16-77
4100448-2 only has these markings 17 A12 'H' was pulled from 1981 Dodge Truck


Manifold Line up

Even though 1973 had a Holley 1920 and a one year only stat for that application, the Holley 1945 stats fit fine.

Here the 1973 has a super six stat and the 1974 has a 1945 stat (stock for that manifold...), both have the same pocket...


1973/74

Even the Feather Duster exhaust manifold works.

1977 and later stacks should be no problem since this was a stock item for them, note that the big difference between the 1976 and 1977 is the new 'bumps' on the reinforcing ribs on the runners... note that runner #3 does not have a bump....

1977/1981

Another interesting observation is how far the skirt on the stat covers the void to the runner, the 1 barrel skirt is a bit longer and is closer to the runner but the 2 barrel doesn't reach as far, no matter what manifold it goes on...

Hopefully this will help enthusiasts swapping super six manifolds onto their vehicles, or spotting whether the donor or project car in question has the correct manifold, or one that can accept the stat.

Some other points- the Carbs Only electric choke conversion will fit on ANY exhaust manifold, open choke pocket or closed, and is a much cheaper and better upgrade to the NLA stock Super Six choke thermostat.

In my opinion the most desireable exhaust manifolds are the lean burn units from the 80s that have a port for an O2 sensor in the backside of the "tower."

Rob- that is a 318 BBD. I can tell from the short and straight PCV tube. The slant six carbs had a longer and angled tube.
