Im getting a little bit of conflicting info online from some real knowledgeable people about whether an 11 inch slant six flywheel I removed from a mid eighties slant six truck will bolt directly onto a 1969 340 crankshaft.

Ive been told that yes it will cause the bolt pattern changed on the slant cranks in the later years and Ive been told that at least one of the holes on crank will be just a tad off but I can weedle the hole just a little bit and be good to go.

Can someone here confirm one way or another?

A V-8 flywheel does have one bolt that is offset from the slant 6 pattern. Here is a picture of the one that I just did.

I just put the locking plate that I had made up on the flywheel with 5 bolts in it. Center punched the one hole that is offset and drilled the new hole. It is in the truck and running fine.

You were of course correct, can you tell me whats the deal with the lockplate,is that something you made and whats the purpose? Im wondering if I would be better off filling the one hole ( welding ) and then redrilling the offset hole?

Just like yours it is close

Thats the 340 flexplate sitting on top of the flywheel

Crap, I cant remember how to post an image[/img]

The Lock plates were made for me by CNC Dude here on the site. It is placed under your bolts and then you bend the tabs up to prevent them from coming loose. Inlines like to vibrate the bolts out! I still have some left if you need one. Just drop me a PM.

Well in a perfect world I guess you could weld it up and then redrill and balance it. But I talked to some racers that told me not to worry about the small amount of weight that you are drilling out. It is so close to the centerline of the crank it won't matter much. Obviously it is going to make the balance off a smidge. Is it going to matter? I don't think so. I did it to the truck we just put together and I did it to the flywheel that will one day go into my racecar.

Just drill another offset hole 180 degrees away from the first offset hole to keep things in balance.....

Factory balances have been found to be OUNCES out, You are
removing a few grams only an inch and a half from the crank centerline,
I definitely wouldn't compromise the integrity of a second hole to try &
"fix" that. Fuggettabouditt!!

Thanks for the offer but dosent sound like Im gonna need one for this V-8.

I planned on having the engine balanced from the get-go for a performance standpoint.

Again I appreciate the info
