Have read that it is possible to soften old hard rubber gaskets by soaking them in a mixture of Oil of Wintergreen and rubbing alcohol and was unable to find any answers using the Search option. Has anyone tried this method?

I am trying to resurrect a 1972 Power Wagon - sorry but not a slant. The gas tank is in the cab and I have been unable to locate NOS/useable gaskets for where the gas filler neck exits the cab or where the gas filler tube enters the gas tank. The ones I have are hard as a rock but would be reusable if I could soften them.

Thanks in advance for help.

Fred

I don't know if this helps...

I've put old rubber gaskets in paint thinner.

They get soft and really really big.

Then slowly shrink back to size.

Lacquer thinner will do the same thing. They will swell about 3 times their normal size and be back to normal after they dry.

Van's Auto may have new gaskets.

Van's has a new neck to cab grommet and a new tank sending unit, thanks.

I will use the paint thinner on the grommets to see how that works.

Thanks for the help & Information.
