My recently rebuilt slant runs well, but has noisier valves than i think it should. I had the head rebuilt at a shop, but when checking the bill, I see that the machine shop didn't do anything to the rocker arms/shaft. Do slants' rocker arms have bushings to be replaced or do the arms themselves need to be replaced when worn?

My '62 head was toast when I took it in, so I had the shop use a later (late sixties) head as a core. On their recommendation I used the original ('62) rocker assembly. Now I'm wondering if the oil slots on a rocker shaft out of a '62 head will match up with the oil slots on a late sixties head. It *seems* like I matched this up when I assembled everything, but it's been a few months now and I'm getting hazy on details. anyone know if these are all the same? Doc?

thanks!

They should all be the same until the hydraulic head came out in '81. What is very possible is the oil passages are packed full of crap. Time to get out the carb cleaner and thin wire.

Are the rocker arms oiling out the tips like they should?
Are you sure the valve lash is set correctly?

As Dennis stated, all the heads and rocker assemblies are pretty much the same up until 1980.

One possibility is that the rocker shaft is not installed with the oiling holes in the correct position. If this is the case, no oil would come out the tips of the rocker arms and that would add to noise and wear.

I'm pretty sure I checked that these matched up when I reassembled the engine... but that was a few months ago, so now I can't remember what I did. I'll be pulling the valve cover to check again.

If everything *is* lined up, but the rocker assembly is just worn, do i need to rebush the arms or replace them altogether?

RAS sells rebuilt rockers and shafts for about $75. I bought a set and there was not even a core charge.
