 Post subject: Darn hurst shifter...

Well it happened again, 55 mph on the interstate and go to down shift and found that I broke another 3-OD shift clip on my A-833OD hurst shifter...I had this happen in wall to wall I-5 traffic in Portland last year (about the same time)....luckily I keep a couple spares in the ashtray and just install another one after jacking up the car. I'm a little concerned that every 12 months or 10,000 miles I lose the same clip everytime. The shifter, rods, and rod ends are in great shape and theyhave a nice positive feel to them (not the usual 'sloppy' wobble when things get loose). The first clip was a stock 'spring' 'C' clip from Year One, I broke it and replaced it with a washer and a cotter pin and broke that too....anyone have my bad luck, or should I be thinking about deburring the hurst shifter lever hole and rod end to make sure I'm not stressing something? Never had this happen 'regularly' before...I'd fear about 'power shifting' during a drag race and getting stuck driving to the pit in OD...

Offah! I feel your pain. BTDT before.
My fix was two fold. I first ordered replacement clips from Hurst/Mr. Gasket and then safety wired everything together. Even if i broke the clip the lever will stay put and the rod won't wriggle loose.
My other suggestion, while ghetto-fabulous, works like gang-busters: stick a freekin' nail in there and bend it up. If you break that mofo you KNOW that you've got a problem.
At any rate, double check the alignment on your shifter. You know, the standard: align the shifter tangs and stick a 16D nail or a 7/16" drill bit in there and then adjust your shift rods. If your rod is adjusted too far out as you shift into the position it'll eventually shear. On the other hand, if it's too short, you won't engage the gear.
It's a seductive dance i tell you! Find the happy medium, and you'll be good in the hood. good luck homey!

helo slant six sages- used tobe fairly regular on write ins to the forum. moved to florida in november from nj and toobusy to do much. some will remember my sl6 od 77aspen wagon and 76 feather duster sl6 and od. havent heard mofo since the streets of asbury park. anyway how does one get the rebuild parts for the hurst shifter, not just the clips and washers for the rod ends. i tried the bent nail trickto . actually works pretty good; but i am talking about the internal parts in the shifter unit. mine in the duster is pretty well worn and dont want to mail it out- afraid i wont get it back. then i would be up that famous creek- anyone remembering the term mofo from asbury nows thename of that creek. regards andhello to chuck, the doctor and duster idiot, my sage heros. nice to be back in the saddle again. let me know on the hurst shifter. callpaladin@aol.com

I used to have the number for the Hurst Help desk and the extension for a good tech. The 'guts' of the shifter a re very simple and just need to be washed out (sand/soil/grime), re greased and re-assembled, save one small plastic 'O' that you can only get from hurst if your's is shot. I got a 'trial' one for free and was going to order a 'bag' full a couple years back but moved and lost the dude's extension.

As for the R&R, it's straight forward, clean it up and lube down and slam it on in-- you may want to talk to it real nice first. ;^)
