Hi All

I have picked up a motor and the bottom looks good
but i dont know if it has a cam ...it pulls to the 5k rpm range

Here is a pic of the cam it has a casted # ( EP 7 )
I think its stock ... we put a gauge on the EX spring and from open to close .375 or close to it ..

EP 7 only tell us that the "semi finished" camshaft "blank" was made by Engine Power Components Corp.
http://www.engpwr.com

Engine Power sells Slant Six cam blanks (p/n EP 7) to all the cam grinders. The cam grinders will then finish grind the cam blank to the needed spec.
You would have to pull the cam out of the engine and look at the rear journal face to see if the cam grinder stamped the grind or an ID number on it.

Couldn’t you figure out the profile using a micrometer and degree wheel? It would take some time, but it might be the only way to figure out the profile.

The photo you posted gives every appearance of showing a cam. If it's in the motor you're asking about, then yes, the motor has a cam.

Wise guy huh!

To the spirit of the question; you could use an indicator at the top of the valve to determine gross lift, and with careful setup determine events with a degree wheel. The indicator shaft would have to be set up very carefully to get accurate information. This, in effect, is how a cam can be checked for degreeing it in.

Grind 818 at 108 LSA would be a good step up from stock along with a bit of port matching and clean up.

Grind 819 is the next step up after that, but would be nicer with a bump in compression.
