Freshly rebuilt 904 awaiting fresh fill of fluid. Dextron (pick a number) seems to be mostly extinct not to be found on the shelves.

This leaves what transmission shop recommended; “Any Brand” all vehicle synthetic. Shop has been refilling older transmissions with this formulation with no problems for the last five years. A trip to parts store for a read of Back said jug of the stuff lists (in a nut shell); suitable for several Asian, Euro Trash, and domestics makes, not for use with mid 90’s and newer GM, Ford and others, no mention of old or new Mopar applications.

I recall advice that ATF-IV perhaps would be juice of choice for the old Tourqueflite. There was only quart size bottles of 4 on the shelf which I was unable to see well enough to its read back (forgot the strong reading glasses). I could make out that this particular store brand was licensed and authorized by Chrysler LLC.

So, do I go with what the shop that rebuilt the thing recommending generic vehicle application fluid with their 50,000 mile / three year warrantee in mind, or Mopar approved ATF-IV both about the same cost per gallon?

One more question; is ATF-IV also a synthetic formulation?

I would go with the shop's recommendation if they are warrantying the trans.

Um…what? No, it isn't, unless you're walking into the wrong kind of stores (bakeries, for example, or cheese shops or paint stores). Dexron is the most common fluid type on the American market. The current version is Dexron-VI. The list of legitimate Dexron-VI fluids is here; look at all those major brands.

This is a recommendation optimised for maximum continued workstream for the shop. In reality there is nothing such as a universal transmission fluid—if you want to spend the dollars on details, that's in this paper, but the summary on the linked page tells you what it says.

Seriously: the Torqueflite is a very tough transmission, and it'll stand up in the face of quite a lot of fluid-based abuse (using severely inferior/outmoded Type-F in the mistaken belief it's superior in some way, for example) so this pretend-universal transmission fluid the shop recommends probably won't kill it. But that's not very high praise, is it?

So in translating your Dan being Dan snippy reply, I should use Dexron VI. White paper summery recommend using manufacture's spec fluid, fifty years ago it was AQ-ATF Sufix "A" factory fill, whatever that stuff was (perhaps Dexron II?). Would less expensive ATF+4 where frequent band adjustments (compared with today's intervals) are called for be OK as well, or will these modern fluids extend band adjustment interval?

Dex-VI is better than ATF+4 in ways including lubricity, thermal stability, and anti-wear performance, and both of those fluids are better in all those ways than Type-A fluid or the previous Dexrons.

There was never a Dex-IV or Dex-V released; they just kept adjusting and improving the Dex-III spec until they eventually went to Dex-VI.

I always use Fram filters and Red Line Lead Substitute just because Dan doesn't like them. If I had an automatic I would use Type F for sure.

Reality is, keep it full and clean and you'll be fine with most any fluid. Is Dexron/Mercon 4, 5, 6 better? Sure. Will there be any quantifiable difference in your hobby or daily driver car? No.

When in doubt, go with the guy who built the trans. He does it for a living.
