66 Valiant: Pulled the head with everything still attached, including the headers, intake, carb, nitrous system, etc. Top of piston looks good, cyl wall has no scoring. Thinking broken ring or collapsed ring land. Next step, pull the short block, and look inside.

65 Valiant: Brakes are done, wheels back on, and moved out of the way, for now.

Got to bust my butt. need to have this engine repaired, and back in the car, running, by Monday. Pre admission testing on MOnday, and surgery on my elbow, on Wed. Will limit what I can do for 7-10 days. Heading for the shop. be back later.

Short block back together. Work to continue later, today. Need to earn some money, before that.

Sweet! If any Slanter can do it, you can.

BTW, thanks again for the 904 advice! All is working well with that although I may play with band adjustments a little to tune the shifts a bit.

66Valiant: Think I found out why it broke rings and piston, Detonation. Crank damper had slipped about 10 degrees. Thought I had about 15 degrees total advance, but had about 25 degrees. I usually put a line across the damper, from the timing "notch", across to the hub. As long as the line is straight, the damper is OK. If the damper slips, the line is offset. I didn't do that to this damper, forgot, I guess. Replacement damper, is marked.

I have been running a Edge hybrid converter, but this engine has the late large crank pocket (used a bushing), but I think, I will try a new FTI converter, I have on the shelf. It is a large pilot, large spline 9 1/2 inch. It will be a good comparison, as the engine has had no changes, just repair. However did change the rear ratio from 3.91 to 4.56

Sounds like great progress, Charlie. Bummer about the damper/timing, but nice to figure that out.

I love doing experiments too...

66 Valiant: Engine and new converter in and running. Still need to do a hot valve adj, and set timing. Not sure about this converter, bangs fairly hard when putting in 1st. Can't check anything else, as there is no place, near me that is not paved with dirt. I'm thinking it might be too tight.

Was hoping to test the 66 Valiant, this weekend, but not to be. Tonight and tomorrow, rained out.

Did get a cylinder head back from the machine shop, today. Said guides were fine, and opened up the seats for big valves. Now I need to start doing the bowl work. Not sure which engine this will go on. It could be used on the 170 turbo motor, or the 225 high compression engine.

Finally got to a test-N-tune, at Gainesville. I don't like the FTI converter on motor only. Not enough stall, and "lazy" on the launch. It works on nitrous, though. Don't know which, or both made the difference, the converter, or the change from 3.91 to 4.56 gears.

Great! The folks at Motormile will really get a kick out of it.

Every time I go over there, a bunch of people check out my cars. Their eyes get really wide when they ask what motor and I tell them it's a Slant.
