Realistically, for me this will come down to cost. Whatever I find first for cheaper will what I go with. I need to save up probably at least $800-$1000 to purchase all parts and miscellaneous bits that need to be changed. I need to have cash on hand to jump on whichever adapter I find first, and then get whichever trans matches the adapter.
The 42-RE has an electronic governor. Its not the quite same as the older A-500, which I think was renamed 42RH. I'm not sure about these details but I believe the 42-RE requires the PCM. I think my '92 Dakota has the 42-RE.

Rigt. THe A500 was renamed the 40rh or 42rh, depending on internal stoutness. 4 speed, 0 or 2 strength level, Rear wheel drive, Hydraulic control= 42rh. The A518 was renamed the 46rh, or 48RH etc... The REs were electornically controlled. I think there was some overlap but I have seen reports that RHs were installed clear until 96. Who knows. I just know I want a hydraulically controlled one and my local picknpull is having another 40% of sale next weekend... 8)

This is one of my long time projects that is waiting. I am going to adapt a Mercedes 722.6 five speed automatic (NAG1) to slant. Bellhousing will be cut and weld from slant 904, controlled with programmable ofgear controller. I already have the parts, custom made flexplate, still need to make the bellhousing mods. Transmission will fit under b/e body, but early a seems to need cutting. Not the easiest or cheapest way to get overdrive automatic, but I want it

Since you have the slant to small block adapter, you could go with a GM 700r4 with a wilcap sbm to sbc adapter by stacking adapters. Later you could add a gear vendors od and 4.56 gears. That would give you a 5 speed automatic and a lot of capability.

For the amount of money it would cost to buy another adapter and trans, I would just swap to a Magnum V* and overdrive auto and skip the adapter plates. I just don't have the money or energy for a project like that.
