The head from the "smoked" engine, needs more work then I have time to do. The combustion chamber and the exhaust port, are full of "sprayed" on aluminum from the piston. Exhaust valve is bent, and needs replacing. Trouble is, I don't even remember getting these valves. They are Manley's.
Found a head in my pile, that just needs washing. Stock size valves, that don't leak, and 39 CC combustion chambers.
Done on the car/engine for tonight. Time to do the dishes, and rest for awhile.

Engine is finished, except for installing distributor. Valves are set cold. Intake and headers have to wait until engine is in place. Need to install engine, and also check out nitrous system. Need to have no rain to install engine. If it rains I can do the nitrous system on the bench.

I'm really interested to hear how this engine runs. Sound pretty much similar build than my 170 that is in my Valiant now. Mine is just without nitrous and with super six intake :D

Engine is bolted in. Still need to install intake (after checking nitrous system), headers, electrical, and radiator.
Going to take a few hours, and help Steve with his slant six car. I haven't thrashed like this in 15 years.
To be continued.

Engine is all in, and running. Will run it some more, today. Retorque the head, readjust valves, check for leaks. If everything is OK, give it a bath, vacuum the inside, and load it on the trailer.

Well, made it to knoxville. Got some time runs, at Cherokee Drag Strip ( https://www.cherokeeracepark.com/ ), as Knoxville track was flooded on Fri. Car would not launch. No bottom end torque. Part way down track, it would pick up really hard (like another carb, or secondarys kicking in). Had battery problem, and while charging battery from truck, the truck caught on fire from a fuel leak due to a split rubber fuel line. Luckily we were able to put it out, with some towels, and no other damage. A friendly local racer supplied a piece of fuel line, so we could get back to Merils place. Sat morning, took the carb apart, and cleaned it. Didn't see any thing wrong. Went and picked up a new battery. Sat night got two time shots at Knoxville, before they cancelled the race. Same problem, no bottom end. Sixty foots were over 2 seconds.
PS: Didn't even put the bottle in the car. Motor runs only.

Built a new carb, and had planned to TnT last night, but got rained out.

I had this same problem with the other motor, that burned a piston, but thought it could have been a combination of a new converter (maybe too tight), and a pretty big cam. That motor ran great on the bottle, but in hindsight, I shouldn't have used the nitrous, as it burned number 3 piston. That is why I am thinking carb problem (lean on the primaries)

The current motor, has a milder cam (similar to what I have run before) and the same converter I ran for years with the 170. It will only stall about 26-2700 rpm. about 400 rpm lower then previous. So I know I have a bottom end torque problem. Hopefully I can find the problem before Clay City.

At least it's consistent.

Hope you get it sorted out Charlie.

We'll know at Clay City. I have done a few things, and will be bringing some spare parts. Will use Fri as intended for TnT.
I don't think I can make one before then, as we got rained out this weekend. If it is fixed, fine. If not I'll run just motor on Sat, and be slow. Then Sun use the bottle, and get the "D" nitrous record and/or blow up. Need to give someone something to shoot for next year. Ryan has had that soft record for too long. :)
I pulled out the 225, and built the 170 just for that.

Pulled the motor on Fri, due to a oil leak, that was too bad to chance leaving alone for Clay City. Found the windage tray was keeping the pan from sealing at the rear seal retainer. Had to shorten the main bearing studs, and cut the threads down further, so I could remove the spacer washers. That moved the tray closer to the crank, and away from the oil pan. While I had it apart, redid the cam timing. Put the motor back in the car, and fired it up today. So far looks good. Will know in the morning, if I have any oil drops on the driveway.
Also built a different carb after Knoxville, and it is on the car now. A Holley 465 cfm VS carb.

Sheeesh, I'm bushed.
