NO LUCK with a recent rebuild from a local shop. Less than a two thousand miles and the compression is shot. I am in Austin, TX. Any body recommend a rebuilder?

Thanks,
Joe

Man, that is a bummer. "SpaceFrank" is in Houston and has had good luck getting things rebuilt there. Super Slant Six guy too.

Well....I wonder why/what happened to your engine...sounds odd.

Do you need an entire new shortblock or just to have someone rebuild the one you have?

If in fact they did something wrong it makes me wonder if they also did your head work...

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. The shop that did my headwork has an excellent reputation and I trust them. The shop that did the bottom end....apparently not so much.

I checked the compression on all six cylinders. Number one is fine, but two and three have zero compression. Four, five, and six are up close to 150 psi, but the plugs I just put in yesterday have oil on them.

Getting a little bit of oil out of the breather cap, but not as much as I was getting when the top of a piston broke a little over a year ago.

I am kind of mystified, because if the rings on two and three were bad, or if there was a hole in the piston, wouldn't it be pumping a lot of oil?

And if it was valves stuck open, would the oil be pumping out of the breather on top of the valve cover?

I am also open to buying a complete short block if anyone can recommend a good company.

Thanks,
Joe

Check the valve adjustment before you go to far. It would be pretty hard to mess up a Slant 6 that bad that quick. Check the simple stuff first.

No, if a valve were open it would not pump oil anywhere. You just wouldn't have compression.

You haven't given much detail but it sounds as if you (could) have had a cam lose some of its lobes. That would cause the valves to stop opening. From the sounds of it, the engine was running better than it is now so something has changed...

Head gasket blown between 2 & 3 ?

Even if you lost some of the lobes you would likely still have some compression. Not zero.

That's right..I woke up in the middle of the night and knew I had posted it wrong, lol. Losing cam lobes will eventually give you all sorts of compression lol.

In any case, assuming (?) the engine ran fine for 2000 miles then 'something' musta happened. Maybe it ran lean and burned some holes in the pistons...or?

Thanks for the advice, guys. I am a little less freaked out now. Next trick will be to remove the valve cover and see what I can see.

No coolant in oil/oil in coolant. Would that necessarily be the case of a bad head gasket?

I will keep y'all posted,

Joe

It could be blown between the 2 cylinders and not get water in the oil.

I'm with Rick on this one, 2 dead cylinders usually points to a failed head gasket between the affected cylinders.

Like others have said, let's start with the basics and see where we get from there.

Who assembled the engine?

I know a couple good machine shops in the Houston area, but we always do the assembly work ourselves. I unfortunately don't know any shops in Austin.

Is this for the '71 truck in your signature? If it's got a mechanical valve train, definitely check valve lash next. Also check the torque on the bolts holding the rocker shaft down; I once busted a rocker shaft during a race after the rear bolt backed out.

Cross-blown head gasket would explain the compression, but not the oily plugs. You're sure it's oil and not carbon soot, right? Is it still making good oil pressure?

What all did you have done to the engine? Any changes to the compression ratio?

It could be a blown head gasket but on 2000 mile Slant Six that's pretty hard to do, unless something very 'wrong' was done during assembly.

Yeah, that's why I'd want to know what all machine work was done. If the CR got bumped up significantly without putting any thought into the ignition timing, it could burn through a head gasket pretty quick.

Granted, bad enough pinging could also make a mess of the rings and cause all these symptoms...
