Loosened up the valves a little. Thank you but still the same noise. I have a video of the sound but it wont let me upload it to the site. Agh.

Exhaust tick is a slight leak between the exhaust manifold and the head, the gasket is not sealing. It will sound like a loud tick, but in my experience it's only when the engine is running, i.e. you need sufficient exhaust volume/pressure to make that sound. I've never heard an exhaust leak tick just turning an engine over, but maybe more experienced grease monkeys will chime in on that. An exhaust tick doesn't sound metal-on-metal to me, more like a loud electric arc.

think like a "snap" sound for an exhaust tick.

Oh I see. I do know what you mean. I have had that issue before and not the sound I'm hearing. Sounds like a hard click/tink sound. Prob going to have to start pulling the trans back out. Cannot tell if it's in that area or in cylinders 5 or 6. This was just supposed to be a drop in and run project. Not wanting to rebuild it. Anyone know of a good running 225 in the central Oregon area? Thank you all.

No kidding..I was hoping I might find someone around that would have something. If you hear of anything not to expensive. Ha. Trying to make a reliable camp van. Something to get out of the dirt but not a motor home or trailer. I figure I'll just unbolt the engine and pull it off of the trans. Then hopefully have enough room to turn it over again. See if it coming from something in the bellhouse or engine.

Check the flywheel to crank bolts, are they tight.

There are engines that come up pretty regularly on Craigslist. Then there's Ceej who seems to have the corner market on finding slants out of old farm implements (threshers and etc).

The folks selling slants in the area currently seem to think they are worth money, so I've been waiting for the prices to come down before purchasing additional engines.

Unless I can drive the vehicle that the engine is in or they can provide documentation on it, I don't pay much over $200 for a core that may likely run, but will need freshening up.

As far as the video, just go to youtube and upload, then put the link here so we can take a listen.

I found a few but in the 500 dollar range. Which of like u said I could drive it maybe. Just dont want to get another problem engine. Funny thing is the original engine had some piston slap in the rear cylinder. I was told by a few friends it should last for a while but I didnt want a prob.
Here's the link. Holding my phone near the oil pan rear of engine.

So I pulled the rookie move and overlooked the smallest thing. I was getting ready to pull the engine forward and I thought Just One Last Time spin the flywheel over again and look and listen. I spun the flywheel many times before and never seen anything but thought I'd give it a another try. That's when I noticed a flywheel tooth missing even though I swore I'd looked many times. It's silly how overlooking something so small can make you want to pull your hair out. So I'm going to replace the flywheel and see if my sound is fixed. But while I was down there looking at the crankshaft I did notice these surface looking cracks. I didn't know if these are normal due to the rough casting of the counter weights....?
Thank you to everyone that it helped me out on this.

Boy howdy, if that winds up being the issue (which it very likely could be) you got yourself all learned up on the rest of the engine now, so getting it going should be no problem!

FYI. Unfortunately, there is no longer a new replacement 122 tooth ring gear to replace the one on your flywheel (if you order the one out of the catalog from ATP
you will get a 130 tooth ring gear for a 10 1/2" V6/V-8 flywheel... your interchange will be for a 1968-1987 slant six non NP-435 equipped vehicle if junkyarding,
make sure to get the flywheel resurfaced before putting the clutch on it.... (you may be able to find a used intact ring gear on Ebay or a swap meet).

Good luck!

Ya I hope the rest will go well. Dont like doing things twice but I must have broken the tooth installing the engine. It was unbelievably tight. Next fun is the distributor install. No Marks on it or engine. So I'll be bumping it over.
I was having trouble finding a complete new flywheel. I have 122 teeth and about 11.5 flywheel diam. I did find a ring gear that was hopefully correct. 122 teeth and with in a 1/_16.
