Cassi's original build featured a slant 6, but when she came back to me I decided (in my typical insane fashion) to remotor'er with something no one else'd done yet. I came up with the idea for a slant 8 after getting a Buick straight 8 in a parts swap. The rest, as "they" say, will be recorded here ........

In that the only slush pump I like is the push button 904, and due to a loss of foot room thanks to the Buick's length I opted for two pedals, and so mated a pb904 to the '40 Buick 248 I'd gotten. I turned a flex plate adapter easily enough, but the bell adapter had to be 1.5" thick. So I bought a piece of plate, and had at it with my O/A set, grinders, drill press, and a few hand files. Four days later I bolted it all up for its initial assembling. Only took a couple hours to finesse it in, and top it off with a mini starter. 8)

This drive train required substantial changes to the tunnel, which I then set about. I also added a couple useful access hatches to it, for the trans adjustments and the rear trans mount and forward U-joint. At eleven pieces, it turned out to be the most pieces I've ever put into a tunnel. Still needs some finishing around the firewall.

The rest of the fitting in was fairly "straight" ( ) forward, with the exception of a unique motor mount being needed off the top of the trans adapter plate, at the firewall. The gas pedal had to go from a floor pivot style to a hanging spoon as well.

Carbs will be four 1.250" SUs that I'm cannibalizing from a set of six from another parts swap. The manifold plates I bought online, and the carb plates I cobbled. The tubes're just some EMT I had on hand, and the balance pipes're just hose (obviously  ).

That's where she's at for now. This (re)project'll take a while, as I can only spare time to work on'er when the garage is clear of other projects. However, I do manage to get in a day or two a couple times a month, so sooner or later she will hit the street. Steady on, and all that. :D

Here's the link to her present Flickr set, and a couple pictures for here as well.

Thanks for the inline rundown, Dick. Looks like an uber cool re-project. Dare to be stoopid.

Regular track roadster style drag link.

Honesty requires me to admit that I forgot to reverse the gear in the box the first time I pasted it together, way back when.

Love the idea of a laid over straight 8.

Did you "cattywampus" the oil pan to take into account the lean?

Back in the day as a kid I loved the sound of a Buick Straight 8 in front of a slush box. We had an automatic 1954 Chieftain 8 that made about the same song; it replaced a 1952 Plymouth. That thing is going to sound sweet.

Not yet, the oil pan & pick-up mods'll be later when I go through the engine.

Got in a few more play days, so did a bit more on the throttle linkage. Also got the rear brakes & parking brake functional (fronts need new drums yet), fuel system complete from tank through pump, and roll bar added.

Then rolled'er up to the HAMBster's trailer so I could bring the HAMBster down to go through the bottom end. Musical Cars is pretty much the name of the game when you hobby out of a 1918 one car garage.

The 'Brick'll stay with me at least 'til Cassi runs. Considering converting'er into a trailer for Cassi at some point, should she not sell.

Can't you use the trailer you have now for Cassi? :? It would be a shame to take the Brick apart to make a trailer!

Or do you mean converting the Brick into a trailer to tow BEHIND Cassi..? Either way, please don't take the Brick apart!!

Yes, option #2. 8)

If the 'Brick doesn't sell when I decide to put'er on the market I'll make a trailer for behind Cassi out of'er. In that Cassi has no stowage to speak of, I'll need to cobble up some sort of small trailer for trips & such. The 'Brick's tub'd make a fun one, should I wind up stuck with'er.

Been back in the garage a bit now & then since the parade. Nowhere near as much time as I'd like, but better'n nothing.

Ordered a bunch of SU bits & pieces from Burlen, just enough to get four of the carbs up to operating status. Wanted to get the linkage parts from'em as well, but couldn't handle their prices.
Sooooo ..... started the cobble, first four levers're now on the common shaft. Linkage now complete to that point. Four more, for the butterfly shafts, up next, then the drag links & springs. "Enrichment" linkage to follow.

Also butchered up a couple slant rocker boxes to try out a cosmetic "cap" for the Buick one. Think I'm starting to like the idea after all. If it turns out decent enough I just might use it. Just another of my hairball notions.

Image

The port side of the Buick block's somewhat similar in casting design to the aluminum slant, so that helps the visual aspect of the concept along a bit as well. You can see it fairly well in a couple of the engine placement pics in Cassi II's Flickr album here.
