Going to put new u joints in...should I go with greasable or not? If greasable zerk in end cap or cross?

Greasable is fine for a street car. Solid cross for racing. I don't think zerk location will matter other than ease of access.

I have had problems greasing front U joint, not enough room to get small gun head between arms of shaft. Required pulling drive shaft to articulate joint enough to get the grease gun on to zerk. I have since changed to a non zerk non greaseable HD front joint; AC Delco # 45U0137

My rear joint has two different sized arms because I run an 8 3/4" rear end.

Spicer sealed joints are all I buy. It's 100% worth the extra money. I did have to take a driveshaft back to the shop once because they broke a seal when they installed the joints after shortening the shaft.

The theory has always been to install the grease fitting so that it is under compression, not tension, when the power is applied going forward. This is also another good reason why you should never drag race in reverse.

If getting a joint that is greased on a semi regular basis, I see no reason not to get the grease fitting on the end cap. My conversion joint is that way in my race car.

And yes it is a good practice to put the grease fitting in so it is under compression.

I have to admit, I don't think I've ever actually greased a u-joint other than right after I installed it. It's not like I put 50,000 miles on any of my old cars anymore. And back when my old cars were daily drivers, I didn't drive nearly as much as I do now.

On our daily drivers, always greasable. I have a small-snout grease gun that does fine on them. Works good with the right tooling,

Why I hang out on this site.

On greasing, are the non grease-able joints solid all the way thru or do they still have the internal drilling but without the drilling/tapping for the fitting?

Seems to me, a hybrid? solution would be one with the cross drilling, and just install a zerk in the center of one(?) of the caps and grease thru that zerk, with out weakening the center highly loaded cross structure by installing a zerk there.

The Spicer joints are solid and they last longer than greaseable ones just like modern sealed chassis joints last longer than the old tech.
