Hey there! The 833 in my 62 Lancer occasionally is very hard to shift into 1st and 2nd. The issue seems worse when it is warm?
3rd and 4th are never a problem.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Barnaby

I would begin by checking to see if the shift rods are set properly.
If it is a Hurst shifter, the process involves uncovering the shifter so the
base of the shifter levers are visible. with the shifter in neutral you should be able to easily insert
a 1/4 inch diameter pin into a hole on the side of the shifter mechanism. I use the shank end of a 1/4 inch drill bit.

If the 1/4 pin passes in easily with the shifter in neutral, check the free play on the clutch pedal, the clutch may need to be adjusted to allow easier shifting.

If the clutch is adjusted properly and there is the hard shifting problem remains,,
maybe try a lube change in the transmission,
possibly there is an alignment issue between the transmission-bellhousing-engine,
check all the mounting bolts including the transmission cross member and transmission and engine mounts.

If the problem remains, worn clutch, and it is past the adjustment stage, or something causing the tranny input shaft to hang in the pilot bearing
or the transmission syncros are worn or the shifter or shift rods are worn.

Thanks DadTruck! I'll start by checking the rod adjustment.

the link below shows detail to the shifter rod alignment process

http://www.ranchero.us/forum/index.php? ... ures.4674/

the manual transmission shown is not an a833 so don't get confused by that.
