Hi all,

I am going to attempt to test fire my engine, which is not in a vehicle. I plan to securely mount it close to the ground, but wondered if there are any good references on how to supply power to the ...power system. First engine I'm working with like this. Additionally, do I need to hook up a transmission for the starter or will that just bolt to the engine? What I'm working with:

1. 1973 or 74 Slant 6 from a Dodge Dart.
2. 1980 A833 out of a Dodge van.

Thank you for any info or direction.

Paul in Phoenix

you will need to have the a833 bell housing mounted to the engine, the starter bolts into the bell.

for electricals, a 12 volt source to the starter and I would wire in a starter relay with a push button switch to energize the starter.
that should be on a remote panel away from the engine.
Running a points distributor would also simplify things, you just need 12v to the coil + side, wire a kill / interrupt switch into
the 12 v wire running to the coil + and you can shut it down easily, I would also have the kill switch on the remote panel.
Configuring a throttle that can be operated away from the engine would also be a good thing.

Use a (momentary on) / off / on DPDT switch.

run and start connected to momentary on
run to on

You have to consciously switch to on (quickly)

Once you set up and run an engine outside of the car, you realize a very convenient place to set up and run an engine is inside the engine compartment of the car.
