Hey all, I'm finally to the point in my build where I'm ready to mockup and cut the floor open for my T5 swap. This one popped up on CL and I think it's a good candidate:

https://dallas.craigslist.org/sdf/pts/d ... 06713.html

I emailed the guy and he has this one and a 94-95 5.0 Mustang T5 which he says has a 1-1.5" longer input shaft. He's going to measure both this afternoon and get back to me. I've searched and searched and all the T5 posts say to get the longer input shaft, but none of them say how long the input shaft is that they're using :? !

Appreciate any help anyone can provide, I think the 1990 WC T5 is the way to go and has been used in other swaps (the best I can tell anyway) but any validation would much appreciated! I also need a bellhousing if anyone has one they're wanting to part with

Thanks,
Ross

I've continued to search old threads, because I knew the information had to be in them somewhere! I found the following posted by Volare4life which I think answers the question. This seller has a newer '94-'95 T5 that he would also part with which has the longer input shaft, which I think makes the swap a bit easier. I'm waiting for him to confirm the trans ID number on the newer trans so I can check the ratios and validate the transmission, but I think that would be the better one for me to get for the longer input shaft.

If anyone has any thoughts I'm happy to listen!

The most common imput shaft diameters and spline counts are those used on the ford and GM T-5's. All Ford T-5 have a 1.0625" diameter shaft with 10 splines. The input shaft on V8 transmissions from 1983-1993 is 7.18" long with a .668" diameter tip for the pilot bearing. The Ford 4 cylinder boxes use a longer shaft (7.41") and a smaller diameter pilot bearing (.590") than the V8 version.

The input shaft on transmissions used behind ford V8 and V6 engines from 1994-2005 is 7.85" long with the V8 pilot diameter. The very latest ford V6 transmissions are internally the same as previous V8 transmissions with the exception of the longer inout shaft. A new, short input shaft can be used to bolt them to the early V8 bell housing, although there is no way to use a mechanical speedometer.

I have the 93-down V8 T5 in my 64 Dart (since 2002). I agree the 94-95 T5 would most likely work better with the longer input. If you can't find a bellhousing, what do you plan to do about that? There should be a dozen or so around that never got used. I think I had 22 made and shipped out back in 2004 or so.

Fortunately, there have been quite a few pictures posted of the adapters that I've collected to use as a reference. Through a good friend I've already located a machinist interested in taking on project with me, so my plan is to have a new one made. If there is any interest on the board, I'd be willing to do my best to put together an effort similar to the one you did before to get adapter plates made for anyone that wants one. At the very least I intend to have him make a 2nd plate for me to keep on the shelf as a template/mockup tool for future needs. Once I've gotten the parts collected and had an initial consultation with him and what is needed, I will make a separate post to collect interested parties.

The seller doesn't have an ID for the long input shaft transmission, so there is no way for me to know exactly what it is. I've read on various online sources (so I think/hope it's accurate) that the longer input shaft can be swapped into the older transmission. I intend to get the verified 1990 T5, and if needed, swap the input shaft and IBR to the later version for the added 1/2" or so of input shaft length.

I'm thankful to have all of the posters here, it's your experience and knowledge that makes me confident I can make this work!

Try www.5speeds.com. they have a chart that identifies the transmission by part number. I believe that the t5 for the Ford v6 has the longer input shaft. Other then that the v6 and v8 transmissions had the same strength rating. Avoid the 4 cylinder transmissions.

Hey guys brand new to this forum so please bear with me. I have a 68 D100 I am in the process of restoring and would love to drop a 5 speed manual transmission in it. Is the T5 the only way to go and Lou asked where he was going to get a bell housing, what bell housing do you need? If someone here could layout all that is needed for this swap it would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, Ranger. There are a few old threads that talk through what a few of us did to put T5s behind our Slants. You could use the search function with T5 or 5 speed terms, as I do not recall the names of the threads. They started around 2002 and had posts in the last 3-5 years too.

The bellhousing was a Slant 6 4spd OD bellhousing with a specially machined adapter plate. Nothing off the shelf. Maybe start a new thread and tell us what you are trying to do with the car?

All the best,

Lou

Technically, if your 1968 D-100 had the NP235/435 4 speed, you should be able to bolt up an early 90's A535 to the bell, without all the custom
fandango...and the NP will haul the weight, a Mustang T-5 could take high HP and torque in a car platform, but not sure if it's up to sustaining a
5-6000 lb full frame truck under duress...

That's great info. Unfortunately I have a 3 on the tree. So all I need to do is find a bell housing that had the 4 speed bolted to it? How about clutch and pressure plate? Dodge or Ford?

What size clutch and flywheel do you have? If it's not 11" with the 9 tooth starter...

The A535 conversion would need the A535, an NP435 Bellhousing/Flywheel/Clutch/TOB/Starter/driveline yoke from a 1972-1987 Truck...if you
have the hydraulic slave clutch setup then a 1963-1972 Bell with 1968+ flywheel/etc...

On top of all this...with either the T-5, or even a 4 speed conversion, you'll be cutting the floorpan for the shifter...

Not sure what flywheel I have yet, pulling the engine and trans next week. I'm sorry but you are speaking greek to me when you mention the A535 and the NP435. I found a 90 Ram truck in a wrecking yard that has a 4spd standard trsn mated up to a V8. Would that bell housing work? I'm sorry but if you or someone could list exactly what I need I would appreciate it. And, I have no problem cutting up the floor to make this work. Thanks for your help!!!
