A fella named Robert Maw is eyes-deep in an aluminum-head-from-scratch project. He's been posting about it in the Slant-Six Club on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/slantsixclub/). Has anyone else been watching this? I think he's actually gonna do it.

Well...time will tell. He seems to have some good background but I read three or four posts on this head and already seen a couple red flags...I'm curious what his goal is in terms of final product...a full-on head that can run properly and go 100K miles or a drag-only type head?

If he is going to go as far as ordering billet, I say a two piece head could be CNC milled out of billet *fairly* easily, one the cad drafting was accomplished.

I have been watching this too. Today it appears he posted he's going to make billet valve covers for $130 each. I must be misreading something.

Same here; I quit Fecebook in 2010 or '11. The withdrawal cravings sucked badly for three days, were annoying for a week, a minor nuisance the second week, and by week three I didn't miss it any more. Still don't.

I'm sure he can make a head. As in the old Lays potato chip ads, we're not interested in just one. Most of us are also not interested in paying full price either! I have no doubts that a person with the talent, free time and funds could build one head. Is he married? If so, its not likely gonna happen! Let's cheer him on, but I don't think its for me and you.

You'd probably want to do X, or Y differently anyway - if I were being asked to pay $6,000 for it, I would!

Right! Here's the Cliff's Notes:

Robert is a master mold maker, with a journeyman in die casting. He runs a tool room. He found a nice aluminum block, bought it, and decided to make a billet 7075 aluminum head for it. His shop time is too expensive for production, so he plans to build prototypes and hand them to a production shop. He's been modeling up the head. He ordered up and received the aluminum.

He's going with a two-piece "bathtub" design for the prototypes. This will not be a cross-flow head; he doubts he could sell enough of them to cover the development cost for that. It will have water jackets. He's "guesstimating" an assembled head should sell for ~$5K.

Heh. FWIW, the guy said there's no turning back, based on how much he's invested in the project.

Nope. That's what he paid for each of the two tilting milling tables he bought for the project. :)

Justa170,

Keep us posted here. It has been talked about a lot. Hopefully his skills and access will allow him to make progress on it. I applaud him. :D :D

Ok, I was sure I was misreading, plus I can't see squat on my phone.

This guy is going in the proper direction. He's building it the way he wants without asking what people think it should be.
