Hi there - I dug into my email and found that the rebuild kit came from Mike's Carburetors - https://www.carburetor-parts.com - and included at least a bushing for the throttle shaft. I see now that they sell a new universal carb based on the 1904. It is made by Daytona.

Does anyone have experience with these Daytona carbs? Searching google gives me mostly positive comments, but not very many.

I am attracted to the idea that they are built to withstand modern fuels.

I do not know how to determine if my carb is worth rebuilding (again) or if I should just replace it.

Thanks

Bart

I am of the opinion that at the minimum your carb is worth a try in rebuilding. I went back and re-read your first post and see that the chipper will start but not run... and it would belch black exhaust when it did fire.. Also you mentioned white exhaust.. and the oil smells of gas..

So My thinking is as follows: The float and or the float needle and seat may be causing the black exhaust smoke. That should be fairly easily fixed.. depending upon if the float is Nitrophyl foam (usually a black color) has gotten heavy with age and has begun not to 'float' as well. This causes the fuel level to rise in the float bowl, and the carb runs rich, at best.

That you have already bushed the throttle shaft is a good thing going for you, and that carb. Also I believe the only ethanol sensitive parts on carbs are usually the float (if it is nitrophyl) or the accelerator pump If it is black rubber. The Blue accelerator pump gaskets are supposed to be much better at resisting ethanol.

I am not sure about the slop in the governor to carb linkage, I would be inclined to focus first on getting the carb squared away, then when the chipper idles and runs ok, you can address the linkage if needed. At the very least, taking the carb off, and to a clean work space so you can open it up in a methodical and organized manor, might tell you more about if it can be rebuilt. at the same time you can inspect the float bowl, and see if there is good reason for the Needle and seat to be stuck open, or something obvious. Careful deliberate exploration may give you more answers, and then you can make the decision about a new rebuild kit from Mikes Carb Parts, OR a whole new carb...
