Compression and a leakdown test to determine the condition of the engine also inspect for oil leaks.

What is a lot of oil? 1qt in 1,000 miles, 1 qt in 500 miles? Do you see oil on the outside of the engine? Do you see smoke? When? Where? Need more info. Compression test is a good start. Also service PCV system. Then go from there.

My guess/bet would be that he needs to replace the valve guide seals to kill the oil consumption, maybe a couple of gaskets along the way too. That can all be done in the chassis without pulling the head.

My engine uses 5 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles, plus a filter.

Timing chain has nothing to do with burning oil
