The turbo slant is finally back on the road after a hectic day of tuning the mega squirt computer with Lou Madsen (dart270). She is once again kicking up hear heals. I can't believe it came out so good. I built it mostly for the coolness factor of a turbo and inner cooler. It was just a project for fun, and something to do for a challenge. I started with zero knowledge, and through the help of this board, and other web sites got it to not only work, but run really well. I never expecting it to be sooo fast. It feels like a strong V-8 but sounds way cooler.

There are loose ends to tie up, not the least of which is the clutch now is way too weak for the power of the turbo slant. Anybody remember the application for the 10" clutch that fits a slant flywheel. I have one in her now, but I don;t remember what the application was.

My biggest thanks go to Bob D, Charlie S, and Matt Cramer, who all had great advice. Thanks for being the inspiration first, and then taking the time to share your knowledge. I hope some day we will get together and share in person, and study each other's cars up close.

Oh yeah, and biggest thanks go to, Lou Madsen, (Dart270), who build the Mega Squirt for me, and then drove all the way from North Carolina to Maryland to tune it for me. Thanks Lou!

Sounds really cool, Dart. As someone who is going down the same path, can I ask a couple of favors?

1. A couple pictures, to see how you packaged everything, as well as inspiration :D

2. Your MegaTune files, so we can see roughly the starting point that you used.

You rock man. I am really happy for your progress, and I hope that I can get my car to this stage one of these days.

Greg

Great job, Sam. Glad I could help out and it was fun to be there for the first firing.

I have some good pics, and I can post some if you are OK with that.

Lou

For 'cars' the 10" clutch was the HD clutch...otherwise it was standard for all trucks and Vans, unless you got the HD truck clutch then it was the low hung starter 11" unit...

very cool,

Hi Rhyno,

I can help you with the fuel injection part, Megasquirt. Here are a couple of links:

http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html

and http://www.msefi.com/

Hope this helps as a starting point.

Greg

Great work everyone, another Turbo SL6 is on the road.

I really need to try another turbo Slant, this time using EFI instead of a carb.
My hope is that using computer controlled fuel injection will solve the fuel curve problems and constant tuning the carb fed turbo system had.
DD

Good job Vader! How much boost are you running? If you want a really cool and mellow sound eliminate your muffler and put on a Monza Dual Resonator.

I can't wait to hear what it runs once you get the clutch fixed. I've just started gathering the parts for my own EFI buildup right now, as I've pretty much given up on that Holley.

Thanks for all the kind words. In a very real sense it is your guys car too. It is another performance slant, and it would not be here if this web site didn;t exit. When I restored the body 3 years ago, I had a 318 to put in it. Gas took a short, quick upward price spike, and I discovered slantsix.com. I sold the 318, and never looked back.

Here are a some key ideas that may answer a few of the questions:

Stock bottom end, custom ground cam with wider center line,
forged pistons, '85 Buick grand national turbo, Clifford manifold, Dutra Duals, 30lb Bosch injectors, vacuum referenced fuel pressure regulator, stock slant distributor timed at 10* initial, and 30* total, swap meet inner cooler of unknown origin, 3"hot side inner cooler tube, 2 1/2" cool side tube.

It is the little stuff that gets expensive, because you cannot just pick it up at swap meets, and you cannot find it in Jegs or Summits, since it will all be custom or unusual.. For instance, a 90* silicone tubing connector that changes sizes too, (2 1/2" to 3") cost $95, and there are a number of silicone connectors needed in an inner cooled set up. I only paid $500 for an NOS Buick GN turbo. You get my drift here. Total cost after EFI, computer turbo, and all associated hardware was around $3000, and that was with me doing almost everything. That may sound like alot, but it will come to that once you are finished.

I will try to get you a copy of the fuel map. Lou can post pictures of the engine. I would love to see what the pictures look like on line. I am not cyber literate enough to do that myself.

Please check out this link for the pics. I have a couple more I could post, but these pretty much sum it up. I compressed them for fast downloading, but I can email larger files if people wish.

Cool, huh? :D

Oh, that is so cool. Beautiful installation too. I have a few questions:

It looks like you used a MPFI setup - what TB did you use?
What exhaust manifold setup?
And how did you rig the wastegate (if any)?
How much boost?
Where did your silicone boots come from?

How fast is it? Is it like:

Ok, its faster.
or
Wow! It is faster!
or
Holy crap is it fast!
or
It is way faster than I ever thought it would be!

I realize those are scientific measurements, but this is a technical board.

Congratulations on a beautiful job!
