Forgive my ignorance, but I'm doing the rear drums on my '65 Valiant and I'm not sure what is the primary shoe, and if the primary shoe faces the rear of the car or the front.

The primary shoe has the shorter lining and goes toward the front of the car. This applies to servo brakes like those on our cars, with the anchor at the top and adjuster at the bottom.
Non-servo brakes have four identical shoes, an adjuster at the top (right below the cylinder), and the anchor at the bottom.
