I have a 63 Valiant with pushbutton shifter.
If the Park lever is pulled down halfway when in Reverse, the park pawl grinds against a spinning gear
The park lever doesn't put the transmission in neutral before the pawl touches the gear.
When in any other gear, the transmission is put in neutral before in goes into Park.

When in Reverse and the park lever is pulled down, the Neutral button moves inward but doesn't go all the way in before the grinding is heard.

I adjusted the park cable and the shift cable, but the Park lever still doesn't shift transmission out of Reverse before going into Park.

What could be causing this?

You should not put the lever into park, until the wheels stop moving.

The rear axle is on jack stands.
The rear wheels were probably moving, but I wasn't thinking about it.
I just tried to shift from Reverse to Park with my foot on the brake and there was no grinding this time.

Yes. Thanks for your help.

I was testing the buttons a few days ago and a little smoke started coming from the shifter area.
I removed the drivers seat to get a better view of the wiring behind the dash.
I removed the shifter to look for a pinched wire.
Then I reinstalled the shifter and tested it while kneeling on my right knee and no foot on the brake (I think I had also released the parking brake while looking at the wires)
I panicked when I heard the grinding, thinking that I must've butchered the shifter or the cable somehow.

I put the seat back in today so I wouldn't forget to put my foot on the brake pedal again.
