This is amazing to follow!
Especially since I Soon want to replace my oil pump in my '61!
Wouldn't the newer 7/8th pumps still pump more with 14 theeth as the 5/8th though...so I'll doubt that be a problem at all!

Got my pump from Doug painted and mounted on may back up motor. it has a much better head and a little bigger cam. As soon as the Mason Dixon race is done I will get the engine swapped and give this a whirl! :D

I am running a bit behind. The pump from Doug arrived in the middle of a garage reorganization, so as soon as I get my garage put back together I will get the pump swapped on my test vehicle. I am hoping this coming weekend, maybe.

Covalts have been known to bust a gear or 3. Great failure testing mode facility!

Thanks Doc / Rick / Reed and others.

Very interesting. Is the idea that if there's an imperfection on one tooth of the cam gear, that any damage it does will be equally distributed over all oil pump gear teeth instead of chewing away at just one tooth? Or is it an attempt to get multiple teeth engaged at the same time?

Also, does this just press onto an existing oil pump, or are modifications / spacers / etc needed to change the shaft alignment?

wish i could help! racing all over now, snow on the way! only had one failure since i had done all Doug`s oil pump mods, but the gear was stock, on a high volume pump, the engine push antifreeze into the base and also took out the cam lobe next to the cam gear! not sure if contaminated oil affected the lobe being wiped! first cam i lost the oil pump gear and a lobe! hope this works i will be in for at least 2 gears!

I have never had a gear failure. However I did wipe a lobe on a DC .528 cam, and that was the only slant six cam failure I ever had. And the only possible oil related failure, since going to full groove mains to solve #5 rod problems, back in the '70's.

full groove mains
Charlie, a couple of questions:
when you run full groove mains
1) did you change the target crank to bearing clearance?

2) did you notice any difference in engine oil pressure?

Asking as if the crank to bearing clearances were not tightened it seems that the additional oil flow would reduce engine oil pressure.
Reducing engine oil pressure would reduce the load on the oil pump gear.

First off, I used a new aftermarket standard oil pump, which is high volumm compared to the OEM pump.
Usually my clearance came out on the wide side of factory spec.
Always ran 10W-30 oil, pressure usually was about 15-20 psi at hot idle (1000 rpm), and 50-60 after 2000 rpm
PS: Had approx same pressure when I added the turbo, which specked at .5 gal/min flow.

Maybe I've just been lucky

I have not forgotten this. I had planned to put the engine in my truck in Mid Oct. but we ran into a couple problems that have slowed thing down. We built an engine for Denny's truck and had issue with it and had to pull it back out and put bearings in it again. Long and short of it is that I just got it running Yesterday. So hopefully I can get my engine swapped out here shortly. I'll give some updates after it is in.

I am actually hoping to pull my truck into the garage today for a bunch of maintenance and upgrades. There is a very good chance that these upgrade will include installation of full oil pressure monitoring gauges as well as installation of the 14 tooth oil pump. I meant to get to this sooner but work and life happened. I will take pictures of the installation and report back my findings as to changes in oil pressure at various RPMs and temperatures.

Engine is out of the truck. I decided to install a new cam and that way give the new gear a "best shot" at working. The cam in the engine I was installing was not perfect and I hated to install that new gear onto it. Cam will be hear Wednesday.

Cam arrived on schedule Wednesday and then I hurt my back Thursday morning. Head needs removed to swap lifters and the cam so I will need to get some help lined up or wait a couple more days. More to come. RC .473/220@ .050 cam. Same as I am removing from the motor. This engine ran 14.80's in the car at 5200 rpm. Should pep up the truck a bit! :D
