Okay, can somebody give me an idea on how much louder than stock this will be?

The car is a '61 Valiant, 170 c.i. Right now it has the stock exhaust on it. (looks like friggin 1 1/2" pipe!)

Anyway, we're Super Sixin it this weekend, and Monday I'm going to have a new 2 1/4" exhaust run out to the bumper, with a Flowmaster 40 series Delta Flow muffler. Anybody run this combo of muffler and pipe? How does it sound?

I've only had v-8s, and have never heard anything but the stock slant six sound, so I don't know what to expect.

Thanks
Nick,
Just weird enough to hop-up a '61 Valiant...

It will sound pretty good everywhere except right at cruise RPM on the highway. That combo sets up a nasty resonance between 2200 and 2800 RPM. It gave me a head ache on the highway, so I put a glass pack resonator on the end, right before the tip, and it sounds much better.

this is a site on ebay that sells flowmaster muffler at a decent price and near the bottom of the site you can hear what the flowmaster sound like..

A well setup exhaust should sound like a 6 cylinder Jag or for that matter a 12 cylinder bimmer.

It's a six cylinder Mustang, not a slant, but I made the mistake of putting a Flowmaster on it. I have headers that go from dual to a single 2 1/4" system, into a 40 Flow, then to the tailpipe.

It does sound ok at idle, but at 1500-1800 rpm, it sounds like someone blowing across the top of a coke bottle or jug - i.e. the sound sucks. :x And in fourth gear that equates to 35-40 mph and in 5th, something right at 50, in other words, pretty much at in-town cruising speeds where you least want or need that droning jug-band "flowmaster sound". The only thing that makes it go away is to drop to a lower gear to get out of that resonance band.

I've been told that adding a resonator ahead of the flowmaster will stop that, but that seems like adding a restrictive bandaid to what should have been a decent muffler. It definitely does not sound like the sound clip on that ebay site. Right now I have a dual tip resonator on the tailpipe that I used to try to tune the sound. It did not help at all.

No more Flows on this car. I'm going to replicate the system I had on my Jaguar to get that kind of tone. Duals, turbo mufflers, and resonator tailpipes. This crappy muffler is coming off.

i had a 40 series delta flow flowmaster installed on my car about 3 weeks ago and have been very pleased with it. ive got only compliments about the way it sounds. my car does have a slight drone at times but it doesnt bother me at all. the flowmaster is way quieter and less obnoxious than my glasspack that i removed. i was told by a flowmaster sales rep that the delta flow would be my best choice in their line and give me the deepest tone. all i could ever find on ebay were original 40 series so i just got mine from summit. as for the sound bites, our 6 cylinders will never sound like those cars because they are all v-8's. i dont think you could ever expect your car to sound anything like the cars that flowmaster records and puts on their sites.

Hey Jack, when you going to update the locost site? I am real interested in how it turns out.

The exhaust system on my '65 Dart is a stock manifold, thru a 1 7/8" single pipe to a 24" glass pack with a turn down before the rear axle. This system is a old as the hills, but it sounds really nice at idle and at speed. You can almost hear the firing pulses thru the muffler.

I've yet to install a Flowmaster on my Slant, but I worked for them for 3 years, and had Flowmaster in conjunction with a Header on my hot-rodded '70 Volvo 145S Wagon back then. I used one of their "Delta Flow" mufflers, which add a series of baffles behind the main baffle to cut down on resonance...Less buzzy "Jug Band" sound (Jug Band, ROFL!) Mine was a 50 Series ("Three-Chamber") instead of a 40 ("Two Chamber")

Wagons, having a larger cabin, need a bit more help in the interior resonance area. My Volvo originally had 2 mufflers, one under the rear seat floor, and a much larger one transverse-mounter aft of the rear axle. I got rid of the first muffler altogether and mounted the 50 series in place of the second one.

Was definately raspier, but not too bad overall...People always used to ask me why my Volvo sounded the way it did.

One of my buddies installed a Thorley Header and a Delta 40 on his Suzuki Samurai, and loved the sound. His Samurai was a convertible, so resonance was less of an issue for him.

Right now my Dart Wagon has a rusty Cherry-Bomb with a turn down. Ack...Gotta get rid of that. Not sure if I'll go with a Flowmaster or something else yet. Might go with a bigger Cherry Bomb and a real side exit pipe, or one of the Dynomax Offerings instead.
